Well, I never saw the skip shift in my car. Had mine supercharged before I ever saw it, and the skip shift was deleted by Lingenfelter.

Send your car out to a tuner and have it deleted in software (voids warranty), or do the skip shift eliminator cable (keeps warranty).

Getting a Tune and a S/C will make it so it doesn't stall...

The only time it gets me is at intersections when someone is in front of me. Typically it's when someone takes a little longer than usual to complete a turn and I have to ease up my previous pace. What's so awkward is that it's so counter-intuitive. If you're driving at lower than normal RPMs, the last thing you want to do is jump all the way to fourth.

Can the eliminator be installed by just putting the car up on a pair of short ramps (like for an oil change) - or is a full lift necessary?
Yea, you could easily install it on a set of ramps. It's proably easier than an oil change. You have to reach up high near the top of the trans, be sure the exhaust has cooled off. You just unplug the old plug and put the new short harness in between. I just took the easy way out.

When I originally posted this last night, I forgot to include the "BEWARE" until after he posted. Maybe it was misleading at first. You all make great cases about skip shifting and from now on, until I can get the bypass installed, I'll try to keep the RPM's up and get my speed to at least 20MPH before I shift out of 1st.

I suggest you try to do it yourself. It's really quite easy...there's a plug that goes into the transmission. You unplug it, insert the SLP gizmo into the transmission socket, and plug the cable that was going into the transmission into the gizmo. The hardest part of it is that there's not much room to maneuver and it may take you a little time to get it unplugged.

(this is done on a 4th gen camaro....but the skip shift solenoid should look the same between the T56 and the current trans.....im pretty sure they will use the same connector as well...)

here is the write up of how to do it
http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...adio_shack.htm

hopefully someone will give this a try and let us know if it works...

here is the picture of a trans with the !CAGS solenoid circled:

Surprised that nobody caught it, but the above circled solenoid is not the CAGS. The CAGS is the other silver one to the left of the one circled.

Nobody can argue that disabling the Skip Shift makes the car more safe. That being the case, it should be something that can be done by the average consumer with minimal effort.

Personally, I feel that the Camaro is the best car for the money on the road today - and by a large margin over #2. But it isn't perfect in every little detail, as no car is. I want it to progressively get tweaked with each passing model year and this is one of those things that can easily be addressed.
I guess just don't really see it as that dangerous. I went up plenty of hills in traffic and it didn't bother me. Now if you are going straight up a hill in colorado or something I can't speak for that. I have killed the engine the most when I am not ready for how fast the clutch engages. That said, The Skip shift only activates between about 15-19 mph in first gear.... I almost wonder what it's purpose is though, is the fuel economy bad at 20% throttle in second gear at 15-19mph?

I would describe disabling it as pretty minimal effort. Like I said, I drank a cup of coffee at the dealership $45 bucks (If you are buying a 30K+ car you can afford this)and it's history, took approx. 15 minutes. Sure I could of done it myself, it was about 20 outside though.

I just wonder though if perhaps this feature is really needed or not given how limited and focused it's actual implementation is. I do have faith that if they didn't need it GM would not have added it.

So you were going uphilll between 15 and 19 MPH, the skip shift activated, and you rolled to a stop, then backwards almost hitting the car behind you? the solution to the "problem" with the Skip Shift lies under your right foot.....I think in 3 months and 1500 miles I've had it come on twice...was a non-event.

How does one know exactly how close the car behind came to hitting him too? Seems like unless you stopped and asked him how close it was it could have been 3-4 feet and you'd have a hard time knowing (what with all the cries of "poor visibility" out there).

seriously guys.... i think the whole "problem lies with your foot" or you need to "accelerate more"/"need to go faster than XX mph"/"stay in first". has been a little exhausted over the past 5 pages, im sure the points have all gotten through in some form or another, some of it has been good advice, some bad and some just plain ignorant comments, jeez not everyone is a pro at driving a manual. the fact is this one incident happened to him and he is looking for a cure to get rid of skip shift so it doesnt happen again..... how about we get past that and focus on people doing the skip shift eliminator mod and their reviews. whether its the free version or not.

several people including myself have givin him an option on how to eliminate skip shift. now its up to him whether or not he wants to do any of it

that or a mod needs to lock this thread before it gets out of hand

CEL -check engine light (someone will ask)

With OBDII systems, the computer is checking to make sure the solenoid is not in an open circuit mode.

If the solenoid coil fails, the computer sees it and turns on the check engine light.

The eliminator kit, includes a resistor to fool the computer into thinking the solenoid is still there, and connected.

As far as doing it on ramps, I bought a great set just for this reason from Amazon.com.
