Suppose you stick your arm into a raging fire and receive 3rd degree burns. You go to the hospital and get treatment until your arm is healed. On your last appointment, your arm has totally healed and the doctor releases you to go on about your life. Before you leave, you ask the doctor, "How often should I return here for these burn treatments?" Common sense would tell you that if you don't stick your arm back in a raging fire again, the answer is never! This is the same way you should think about your paint. The question is not about how many times you can do this entire process to your paint, it is about what you need to do to keep from having to do this entire process to your paint MORE THAN ONCE! You have to learn to be preventive, not reactive. This is why I do all the things you see in my wash and wax videos. The 2-bucket wash. The foam gun. The drying technique. All of these things contribute to me never having to get brutal with my paint again. Once you totally correct your paint, you should NEVER have to do it that way again. Sure, you're going to pick up light scratches here and there, but the way you will go about taking care of those instances is a lot less brutal than the first major correction you did. Thus, you can do these "touch-ups" for years without worrying about your paint. Of course, the less you have to do, the better it is for your clear but the PC-7424XP is not going to wipe a lot of clear coat off your car anytime soon. That is what makes it so safe for a novice to use and is also why it takes so long to fix really bad damage with it. So now you know. It's not about how many times, it's about doing it once and avoiding having to do it again. Quote:

Is this orbital, and this pad, all I will need to use to get my clear back to good? Obviously I will need to do the preventative maintenance, but to correct the fine micro scratches. |

Junkman, let me start by saying how thankful I am for all of the hard work you put into your video tutorials - absolutely excellent work and full of the information 99% of the population needs to keep their car looking almost as incredible as your Vette. If I was still near Louisville I'd pay to hang out with you (I was at Fort Knox back in the mid 90's, used to love the good ol' Dixie Dieway going to Louisville)!
After watching all of your videos I am really considering picking up a PC, but wanted to ask if you've ever heard of Griot's Garage. If so, what do you think of their products? They have what appears to be a really nice random orbital buffer there, but the PC seems to be the gold standard. I did pick up some of their microfiber cloths and they are very nice, no tags! |

Which kit are you looking at getting? I would like to compare it to an Adam's kit to see which one gives the best bang for the buck. Come on back to the 'Ville. We'll cruise ol' Hwy 31.

Junkman,
I didn't see any kits that seemed to give me everything I would need, they seem to conveniently leave out one piece you would want or throw in something you wouldn't want. They do have a lot of nice looking products, though. Here is the link to their orbital: http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/...dom+orbital.do The handle on it seems like it might do a decent job at keeping pressure on the center of the pad. I see by your sig that you appear to be a former Marine? If so, you might get a kick out of this article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35857447...shington_post/ God bless 'em!

In my videos, I DID NOT use 2000 grit paper. I want to make that very clear. That will quickly get you into trouble. My videos consisted of using 2500-3000 grit paper. I would never use Turtle garbage as a compound to remove that damage either. That's what took you so long. In my videos, I did one pass with Adam's SHR and got rid of all the damage with a PC. A PC IS NOT going to remove 2000 grit damage.
As thin as the clear coat is on these cars (and I know first hand from all the Camaros I sanded on at Camaro5 Fest), I would NOT recommend anyone with no experience do any wet sanding on your Camaro. What it cost to have someone professional do it compared to a repaint is significantly cheaper. Don't screw yourselves over. Wet sanding is best left to someone who knows how to do it.

I got a great result using the "garbage" I am sure you know alot and I learned quite a bit from watching your videos but if you don't want anyone wet sanding there vehicle then why do a video on it? and I am not rich, I can't aford to buy every item you suggest to use. I am a guy that has some scuffs, learned alot from many resourses and found great success using "garbage" sorry that offends you! I never used a PC did it all by hand, and I got ride of the 2000 grit damage with all Turtle wax products. it took a while but that was to be expected. I got a great result, I will be sure not to reference your videos in the future, sorry I offended you!

I post on a ton of different detailing boards. People are quick to try stuff that they read on these boards, however, the posters of some of the more dangerous info never supply any videos or detailed pictures of their finished product. Often when I ask them to post a detailed pictures (as in a flash test pic), I never hear from them again or they get upset and refuse to do so. There is a reason for this. It is because their perfect results are not so "perfect". In my videos and through my pictures, I give real world, in your face, up close proof of my ability. That is the only thing I can do short of having someone come over to my place and look at my car (to which I always have an open invitation). Let's face it, what some guys think is flawless paint looks like crap. The same can be said for what some guys call a knock out woman. I like to show what my standard of flawless is so that everyone knows where my benchmark lies. If you are going to suggest that someone try something like you did, make a video and post some pictures just as I did with the videos you saw. That way, everyone is on the same page with the results you had. If you had seen the thread where that video series was posted, you would have seen all the information that is associated with that video series. Notice that I haven't posted that series here. It was made for a different forum where advanced techniques are discussed. One thing that I stress in my videos that you didn't mention was the use of a paint thickness gauge. I am the last person who wants to see a guy mess up his paint because of something I said. You should take the same stance when suggestion something as advanced as wet sanding. Lastly, Turtle wax IS garbage. You proved that to yourself, even if you didn't realize it. If you are going to be doing advanced paint repair techniques, you should at least use products that are on par with that type of work. Meguiar's, Zaino, 3M and Adam's are all in that neighborhood, with some being more versatile than others. I feel advice is about responsibility, and I don't want my advice to be responsible for another guys wallet going down for the count..
