I wish I had a nickel for every time I heard the Sandhill-crane-jumped-in-front-of-my-Camaro story.

If I were on a unavoidable collision coarse with any animal I would never leave the road. Only exception would be a moose, because there is 1000 lbs. above your head.

So would you want to hit this head on with YOUR camaro??
I would still plow that thing, and keep on driving to where I can stop and throw it in the trunk... CAUSE THEN! I can go get a new front end made to look like BB from TF2!!!

It continues to amaze me. Ford guys think their shit is so great. Why then do you need DOHC and 4 valves per cyl. plus forced air to beat a production pushrod engine with 2 valves per cyl. Face it, when it comes down to it Ford just can't compete. New slogan for the Mustang. "You can't fix stupid"!

Rule #1 as any cop in Flordia will tell you is never swerve for an animal. Hit the brakes and drive straight. If you stop in time...hurray for the little critter, if not..oh well. I had a friend who swerved for an endangered giant land tortoise and ending up rolling the car into a ditch. Luckily she was fine but the Sheriff told her it is much safer to hit the animal. Most of the worst car wrecks police see, like rollovers, are caused from people swerving too hard. Also, if you brake hard enough, miss the bird, and get rear ended you're not at fault. The jerk tailgating you is going to get sited for causing the accident, at least in Florida because it is a 'no-fault' state.

i mean everything you are saying makes complete sense, and a lot of people have said similar things, but my natural instinct was to swerve. maybe next time when i encounter my infamous enemy, i will know better and plow right into them

hmmmmmmmm

EDIT: Not to mention, judging by the pics, at least one of your tires needs to be replaced also

I recently hit a curb as I'm sure you all know, and did WAY more damage that the OP did. New rims, from GM were less than $600ea. dunno where you're getting the $900 from unless you're including the tires???

I got this from my estimate....

+1 ... I was joking about hitting the gas earlier ... use those Brembos if you got 'em and keep straight ... but swerving and risking overcorrection isn't a good idea, from personal experience. Again, we all understand instinct is to swerve, but for future reference. Glad no one was hurt though.

I cant imagine you could possibly get in trouble if a wild animal runs out in the middle of the road, and you accidentally hit and kill it. That just doesnt sound true. So the goverment really expects you to serve all over the road trying to miss a bird and put at risk everyone around you? Including the possibilty of killing a family, or flying in to a tree and killing yourself?? I dont think so. That bird would have been road pizza if it was me.

You won't get in trouble for hitting any animal on accident ... The one animal I will go out of my way to avoid is a skunk ... You hit one of those and you will NEVER get the smell out of your car, no how no way ... Been there done that and ended up scraping the car ...

all depends if they spray or not. one night driving home up a curvy hill I hit a family of them (2 or 3 went under the car) and never had a single smell.
