A GM person who should know told me emphatically that AFM DOES work in sport mode. Using the tap shift helps only if there is enough load (I think based on fuel flow) to keep it out of the picture. You can "learn" how to drive to keep it off most of the time, but what a pain. I experimented a lot with tap shift, and believe the GM guy was exactly right. You have to select a gear and be on the gas pretty hard to keep AFM off. Pretty hard to do in the afternoon stop-and-go commute.

Yup. My greatest frustration point was a four-lane highway that, in commute time was a 35 or 45 mph stretch with lots of traffic lights and speed-up-slow-down. The noise and surge of AFM kicking in and out drove me nuts. Tap shift to keep the revs up helped, but when traffic slowed down enough, it kicked in. I have heard that altitude and temperature affect the perception of the AFM, but cannot verfy that.

yep, it is ridiculous, people hate it. sounds like a fart can and comes on when you don't want it to. should also have been an OPTION, not a standard feature for the automatic, for the people that only cared about gas mileage and daily transportation not for V8 power lovers.

Alright guys, the consensus is that IT SUCKS and it needs to be tuned out. About how much $ to get rid of it?

I have CAI intake & GMPP axle-back exhaust (sounds exactly how I wanted), and AFM isn't an issue at all. And even if it was, I could manually keep it off... just by driving aggressively (higher rpms) in [M]. So yes, it can be controlled without getting a tune, even for a full exhaust (although if you get headers, you should get a tune).

This is the first automatic I have ever owned. I have had M6 in C5 Vette,Mustang and Porsche and I am completely happy with this car and the Automatic. The AFM is not a big deal you can cruise in D or put it in sport or shift in M with the tap shift. Most people adding there 2 cents are the M6 guys who are anti automatic. Same guys that think the color they got is the best. Get what you want. Test drive it first and make the right choice for you.

If your dealer will use that equipment, and run those tests... is another question entirely.
