Break-In Period?

Hey guys, I was wondering if you guys were ever told of a break-in period when you got your baby. I would prefer to hear from people who have the L99. But any response is welcome. The guy at my dealership told me to be safe, do 1000 miles. Anyone hear anything different? Thanks guys.

It's in the owners manual. It says don't do anything in excess of 100mph for the first 1500 miles. So for normal driving conditions I'd say keep it under 80.

Drive it like you stole it , right off the lot. Change the engine oil and filter at 600 miles.

I have driven every new car I've owned like it was meant to be driven When I bought my C6 I went WOT on the road in front of the dealership.

My C6 was at the track with temp tags still on it. :P 50k miles later I have 0 problems.

Motors should be fully broken in from the factory. The more important thing to watch is rear-end and brakes. When you have a new car don't maintain the same RPM for an extended period of time or ride the brakes.

There was a lot of discussion on this a while back. You might want to search and read. One camp says hit it hard from the start, another has a procedure to follow, still others say go by the manual. And yea, it included L99 specific advice.

Owner's manual says take it easy for the first 1500 miles. Dont go above 4000 RPM EVER. And don't stop suddenly

Run it like you want. Pretty sure there is a 5yr 100K powertrain warranty. Just try not to be too stupid lol. Dont see what it sounds like to bounce the RPM at the max revs etc...

I think varying speed has more to do with breaking in the transmission/rear end. By alternating between acceleration and deceleration, you load the rear end/tranny in alternating directions. By setting the cruise, you're only breaking in one side of the teeth on your gears.

As for the brakes, I've always thought that the best way to break in new brakes was to find an empty road and do a series of progressively harder stops. I've taken tours of assembly plants before, and they always seem to do an ABS stop or two on the rollers before the cars go out the door.

Read the book. I have an L99 and the book says to keep it under 100 mph and 4000 rpm for the first 1,500 miles. I think that the engineers that designed the car probably know what is best for it. Seating the rings and all of the other things like break in oil are from the past. Go by the book. The machining procedures have improved so much in the last 20 years and that allows the engines to be much more precisely machined. I know of what I speak, I am a tool and die making machinist who is very fluent in CNC programming and machining. We can do things that were a fantasy 20 years ago with the equipment that we have now. The last thing that you would want to do is to cause undue wear to your bearings while seating your rings. I do not want to hear what the racers do to their engines. They are rebuilt every so often and they are not driven on the streets so they have their own way of breaking them in.
Mine turned over 1500 miles on my way to New England Dragway where tarction problems limitted me to a best run that night of 13.3 @ 107 mph.
