Exclamation Cadillac ATS confirmed for production. To take on 3-series, A4, C-Class, IS, TL, etc.

Saw some announcement at Atsforums that GM just announced that the ATS small to mid-sized car will be produced and it'll come in coupe, sedan, wagon, and vert. And also an ATS-V version

Anyone think this has a shot at taking on the 3-series, A4, C class and that whole competitive bunch of cars? It's such a popular segment I'd love to see Cadillac actually be competitive. It's a segment GM really has no good solid car in IMO.

I personally would love to get into an ATS-V coupe after seeing what a monster the CTS-V. Anyone think the ATS-V coupe might be about same price as a Camaro SS and any idea when it might come out? I'm close to ordering my 2011 Camaro but might weight to see the ATS-V coupe if it's close.

Here's a recent photos of the ATS testing, but can really only see the smaller wheelbase.

It's been referred to internally at GM as "the BMW killer."

Based on the new Alpha platform which will underpin the 6th gen Camaro.

ATS-V probably won't be available until 2015ish.

2015?

Is the "BMW Killer" nickname just because they hope it'll be one or based on actual tested performance results already?

I would assume it's because it's being developed specifically to beat the 3-series. As you can see from the test mule, they're currently doing chassis/suspension tweaking right now, probably some powertrain work as well.

Well, the pics included in that link are showing a CTS body on the ATS frame... kinda funny lookin. Are there any concept drawings or anything out there for the ATS?

Thanks for clarifying. I too did not grasp what the OP was saying about noticing the smaller wheel base (ie being under a CTS body)!

Didn’t Cadillac make a car a few years ago to fit in the 3 series market? But, it didn’t sell.

so what's Cadillac going to make to compete with the 1-series? Well, you won't have to try hard to beat its looks, that's for sure. the 1-series must've been made purposely ugly so people would want to step up to the 3-series...

This is a rendering done by a GMI member. It's more or less what it should be.

Engine lineup should be an all-new 2.5L I-4, 2.0T I-4, a V6, and a V8 for the V-series model.

Well, the ATS is going to be a step below the CTS, so I'd expect pricing for the V6 models to be right around where the SS is. My guess for the ATS-V, if they build one, is that it will be above 50k for a car that should perform very similarly to the Camaro SS, much like the original CTS-V and the LS2 GTO's.

I hope GM is looking forward and not just at the current model year 3-series...by the time the ATS comes out, BMW will more than likely have already leapt ahead with a new 3-series and GM will look like an also ran before they even start one up.

For instance: GM's CTS-V barely beats the current BMW M5 on the track and in a straight line...however, BMW is launching the NEW M5 already and it will most definately leave the CTS-V looking like it is stuck in park. Twin Turbo V8 with a projected 578 HP, 530 lb-ft of torque, 0-to-60 in 4.4 seconds and 188 MPH top speed. (the V-10 in the current car is 507 Horse and 390 ft lbs) .

GM USED to lead the world...now it follows. And it drives me nuts.
