Differences in Magnaflow mufflers?

I'm going to be doing a custom exhaust shortly, and I'm trying to decide if I should go with the Flowmaster 40 Series Delta Flow mufflers or a Magnaflow muffler?

My question is what are the differences in the mufflers that Magnaflow makes? All I can find on their site is the different sizes. Also, should I go with a 3" or leave the factory 2.5" pipe in place for my L99? I don't really have any plans for FI, but will be adding LT's, cats and a cam shortly.

Thanks!

Magnaflow oval mufflers use a "straight through" design with a perforated pipe surrounded by mineral wool packing. Their round "bullet style" mufflers use the same design except there is less packing, thus they are advertised to be louder.

Flowmasters uses chambers with no packing in their mufflers.

Chambered mufflers drone like crazy on these cars. Magnaflow...not so much. Ask me how I know...

I've heard that if you won't be going F.I., you should stick with the 2.5" tubing.

How much are you paying to have a custom one done for you?

Before you do a custom job you should call JDP Motorsports (www.MagnaflowPlus.com). Don't go by the prices on their site. Call them and tell them you're with Camaro5 and get quotes then. They'll know everything for you on Magnaflow stuff. My guess is that by the time you factor in the all the mufflers and tips you'll probably be able to get a cat-back from Magnaflow or Flowmaster already done and possibly cheaper.

You shouldn't NEED anything more than the 2.5". Performance wise you'll probably be fine. Sound wise the 3" has a deeper tone than the 2.5" which I thinks sounds better.

You should also consider what you are going to do down the road. If you plan on LTs then you should make a decision as though you are putting them on now so you don't have to end up buying a new cat-back when you put on the headers.

What I did was the muffler delete with the resonated x-pipe first. I did that as cheap as I could because I knew I wanted headers down the road and would buy a cat-back then. Sure enough....about 7 mths into it I put on KOOKS with the Magnaflow 3" (#16483) and sold my exhaust to someone with and LT.

Magnaflows are polished, and Flowmasters are painted black. I like em black, some people like to see the shiny muffler from the back of the car.

Thanks! I will give them a call!

To do the custom exhaust it's gonna be around $440 + tax:

* $129.95 - Edelbrock X-Pipe
* $145.38 - 2 Magnaflow 12216 Mufflers
* $ 64.10 - 2 Magnaflow 35136 Tips
* $100.00 - Install

Sounds like a good price.

That's real cheap for those tips. Are they the 4" double walled tips that say Magnaflow? If they are then that's a steal.

If they'll be willing to do the install for that price even if you supply the parts then you can probably shave a little off that price by getting some of your parts through JDP.

Don't quote me on prices but you should be able to get the Magnaflow Tru-X for under $80 shipped. The mufflers and tips are priced about right. You might check with JDP on which mufflers to get depending on your tastes. Magnaflow makes some round ones and some oval ones. They'll give you more or less aggressive sound depending on what you want.

I guess you could say I now have a custom Magnaflow catback.

I started with the 2.5" Comp Catback, but it just didn't give me the sound I wanted, plus the drone was killer.

So then I ordered the same tips you are talking about above and a pair of Magnaflow 14866 which are 14"x5" round resonators and placed them where the mufflers go.

It turned out great. It now has the sound I was looking for. It has a nice deep rumble, it has a slight AFM drone, but I use tap shift to go around that until I get it tuned out and not too loud. So it is really just a resonated x-pipe and the 14866 mufflers.

@caverman

You were right! JDP has by FAR the best price on this type of Magnaflow setup that I can find anywhere! Thanks again!

SWEET!

JDP always seems to have the best prices on Magnaflow stuff. Haven't talked with them about other products but I'm sure they are competitively priced on that as well. Great customer service as well.

Sounds like your exhaust guy's prices aren't off the wall. They are actually pretty well priced for a local company....but if you can save some money why not.

You also can get a mufflered x-pipe from magnaflow fro less than $100. Thats what I have on my car now with LTs. Although I haven't cut the stock cans off yet.
