what is a LIMITED slip differential?

i have searched all over google, and i really havent been able to find anything.

i know the basics of a rear differential and all, but i cannot for the life of me figure out what a LIMITED SLIP differential does/is.

any advantages? i know the V8 has one, but does the V6?

It is a dif that acts like an open dif until it gets torque applied to it. Then both wheels receive power.

and most limited slip diff's can usually only transfer up to 30% of the power before allowing the inside tire to break traction. Torsen diff's can transfer 100% of the power.

There are some LS diff's like Quaiff and Kaaz that transfer more...

The purpose of a limited slip diff is to transfer power to one or the other of the rear wheels when one of them loses traction.

If 1 of your rear wheels is on grass and the other is on pavement and you tried taking off with a regular diff you would spin the tire on grass and not go anywhere. With a LSD both tires would get power and you will take off. Not as good as with both tires on pavement but better than being stuck.

Limited slip for the most part is a joke. The idea of it is to help you gain traction with one wheel if the other loses traction. The kicker is though, for it to work there has to be some traction available to the wheel that is spinning to send power to the wheel that isn't spinning. If the wheel that is spinning has no traction, then limit slip is no better than an open rear. That's why a locker is better in terms of traction overall due to the fact that it needs no traction from the other wheel at all to make the one not spinning work.
Limit slip works okay on a car with dry roads that can allow both wheels to get good traction to help both wheels get close to equal power.
