Buffing

How do you protect or buff close to the stripes? I heard about one horror story where a guy put tape and now can't get the line off.

Tape. Use low tack blue 3m painters tape... don't use something like frogtape as that has active chemicals in it made to block edge run of paint.

Mask the edges off and don't buff across them... the tape is there be insurance against hitting that edge, not a reason for you to go nuts crossing over it.

+1 !!!!

I used the green tape, Made for cars, on my hood. Not a line to speak of! I remember reading the story of the guy with the lines. Not sure what he did to get those lines, but that is not a normal result!
