I went to the NY auto show twice, and asked what the weight of the ZL1 would be, twice. Two different reps, both said the same thing. Basically, it's gonna be around 4000 pounds. One said a little over 4100!!

My guess is that the usual scenario on the street when a GT500 and ZL1 would actually race would be that the one that stops burning the tires first and actually hooks up will win the race. However, there's still going to be a lot of unwanted smoke!

If the ZL1 actually gets PTM, then it is going to have a huge advantage. PTM was the solution to getting the ZR1 to hook up off the line. It's not all about HP.

The ZL1 will have technology that makes a lesser experienced driver (like me) better at launching.......

but if I race someone in a GT500 that really knows how to drive and he beats me, is it because the GT500 is a better car or because he is a better driver?

Will that make me like my car less?

In the end, the better car is the one that you personally think is better.

Sweet car.

As far as I'm concerned when you start talking cars with this much power, its ALWAYS a drivers race. If anyone messes up the launch even a bit, its more than likely GAME OVER! Even if the ZL1 ends up with 600+ HP, its still going to be a drivers race. Only if both drivers manage a perfect launch will you be able to give credit to the car for the win.

But, it will be awsome to see what the ZL1 and the new GT500 (or whatever it turns out to be) for 2013 run when they are driven to their potential. Thats what will end up being the "online trash talk" material.

Well if they put in a programmable performance traction control it puts it in the win for the drivers race..

i know what youre getting at, but then why does anyone post their hp - i could say, well, that was on your dyno...get my point.

I doubt PTM (Performance Traction Management system) will make it to ZL1. It adds [a lot] more expense to the car. But if they DO manage to get it in, and still be under $50K (base model of course), it will be one hell of a buy!

I get your point but we all know alot of people run for high number spitting dynojets when they dyno..

SAE suppose to correct this but you still see different numbers dyno to dyno. That why they say dynos are just for tuning.
You want to see what a car really puts down look at its trap speeds (as long as driver doesnt shift like an 80 yr old lady)

I was being a smart ass by emphasizing nobody needs a ZL1 to beat any car if they really wanted to.
Fact of the matter is the stock LS3 engine was underbuilt for the SS it could have been built up a bit better with internal and accessory parts to match it to a GT500, but GM chose to go halfway. All, it would have took was better internals and air flow. I have 550hp. currently, and only a CAM (and accessories race rocker, dual springs, and rods), Headers, exhaust and a decent tune. That puts the SS and GT500 at about par considering the SS is a bit heavier.
IMO, the ZL1 is just a label; It's a Camaro with better engine parts, an SC and some suspension upgrades, the frame, body, engine, and most likely the tranny will all be the same.
