That's it, I'm done with AFM/DOD

Yesterday on my way to and from the track, a 100+ mile trip each way, I decided to drive with it on and with it disabled. On: 24.2 mpg. Disabled: 23.6 mpg. 70 mph, each logged for about 30 miles.

I've been trying to justify to myself why I should like AFM. New technology (the way of the future), better gas mileage, and well, that's about it, other than perhaps it being a Team L99 thing.

Worse thing is with a modded car. Earlier, I disabled it around town gears 1-4, because of the 3200 stall torque converter. I've already been annoyed by the drone from the Borla Touring exhaust and the Lifter noise. Now, with my new JBA Shorty headers and midpipes, it's practically undriveable - just annoying and loud.

On the way to the track, I noticed surging. The two attached images will explain. First one is with it on, and you can see how the load on the engine varied and the rpm fluctuates and the big changes in timing (stock High Octane table). Second one, you can see much smoother delivery, load changes and rpms.

So aside from saving us the Gas Guzzler Tax on a completely bonestock automatic, I can see no advantages to L99.

Buh bye AFM! Can't wait to do a complete AFM delete and not just a tune disable.

Oh, and I ran a 12.1 @ 112 with a 1.65 sixty bolt-ons only.

Nice times, and congrats on ditching the AFM. I'm not a fan myself.

Great times though! A nice AFM delete and a VVT-3 Tx Speed camshaft would do that car wonders! The VVT-3 camshaft adds 100 horsepower on a L99 engine, but it will require the removal of those stinkin AFM lifters!

What's the duration on that cam? How streetable is it? Suitable for a daily driver?

yes the vvt-3 cam package adds 100 flywheel horsepower (approx 80rwhp) to a bolt on car.

I'm preparing to buy an SCT Tuner, is that what you use? How do you go about doing a complete AFM delete? I'm new to modding cars and don't know that much about handheld tuners vs. dyno tuning. Everyone says dyno tuning is better but it's kind of pointless to do it now considering the only mod I have done so far is a muffler delete.

I use HP Tuners. About $600 and lots more flexible, but requires some tuning knowledge. On HP Tuners, you just change one parameter to DISABLE. Then install the new tune. You can also try it to turn off in gears only, e.g. leave it on for only gears 5-6 (I tried that yesterday), which would theoretically help in around town driving.

Yes, I don't want to brag, but it REPRESENTS!

8th now on the bolt-on list, and I think in the top 3 on bolt-on 60's.
