Sport mode with the L99

I have SOLO high flow cat with MBRP 3" exhaust the rest of the way back. L99 also. Sounds good but the AFM (active fuel management) is annoying.

Why couldn't GM turn off the AFM when in sport mode? Would be a nice option. I am not an engineer but wondering if it would be possible.

FYI- I don't want to tune my car because I want to keep the warranty.

It can be done with a Tune. I'm guessing GM could not do that from the factory since it would likely violate the EPA rules.

If you don't want a tune, just use tap shift to avoid AFM drone. That's what I did until I got it tuned out.

Stupid me never thought of that. I am not a big fan of tap shift but I love listening to the exhaust play its music.

Many of us tried the GM route, and got nothing. Maybe someone else had better luck, but they generally won't tamper with anything power train under warranty. Could they do it? I am sure, very easily...

I held off on the tune bug for barely 6 months... I know you want your warranty, but damn was it well worth it. Tuning my vehicle for both high and low end vastly improved the tone at idle as well. However, if yours is a DD, I could understand not wanting to get it done. If it is a weekend warrior, I would always go for it. I gambled that my power train would not have issues in the first 15k miles as I only average 5k a year.

I asked the dealership to tune it out and they said they had no program to do it yet. The argument could always be made that they would just say that but the guy seemed sincere. He had actually researched it after I told him not to worry about it and seemed like if they had the program he wouldn't have cared and would have done it.

I need to try the tap shift again. The ONE time I decided to try it I was in traffic and it wasn't fun.

Yeah, bumper to bumper is no fun. That is probably why you bought an automatic in the first place!

But remember that if you hold the tap up-shift button in for a couple of seconds, it will go back into auto sport shift mode. I drove for about six months before I read about that feature. Before that I was moving the shift selector back into drive and then back to sport mode. Irritating.

Now, even with a tune, I enjoy tap shift mode and can quickly go back and forth from sport mode to manual mode with just a touch of the button. Nice!

Probably had to do with federal gas mileage requirements and avoiding the gas guzzler tax

I only got the automatic because the car is my wife's DD and she was afraid to learn stick. I'm not too regretful though.

That's the only reason it's on there in the first place but still. The worst part is that it drives me nuts but my wife actually likes the sound it makes when it kicks in to AFM (with the GMPP exhaust)

I believe if you put it in sport mode with the shifter and also competition mode on the electronic traction control switch it will hold AFM off and shift at a higher rpm and also blip the throttle on downshift's to rev match the drivetrain. If my memory serves me correct. I ran a rental this way after discovering that paddle shifters had a little lag time.
