I have to say though Mike, I was a bit dissapointed to hear that you are dropping a crate LS3 back in and not touching it..I can understand after what you just went through, but there will never be a better time to drop a forged longblock in there with a (sorry have to say it) 3 bolt cam and it will be stronger than the untouched LS3 and ready to roar...you already said you are adding bolt-ons and a tune....you know that mod itch is gonna come back and your are gonna stratch it!! (wow, I sound like a drug dealer) probably can salvage some stuff from your motor..either way...can't wait to hear that your back on the road with her

I thought that might have been part of it...that's why it has to be dropped in already stroked so he doesn't have to touch it As simple as saying CC performance or some other is going to rebuild me one with a new block and parts from his that can be used and ship it back ready to go in..just saying. I understand though. My wife would be pissed too...in fact she already is...I have to step carefully when I talk about any further mods to mine.

I looked at the crate motor prices  . With that kind of money you could get a LS3 bare block, heads, crank and throw some forged internals in it. Or you could spend about half as much and buy a low mile LS3 long block, you don't really need all the extra stuff the crate motor comes with (intake, coils, manifolds, accessories).[/QUOTE]
That's exactly what I'm saying...he can pull a lot of stuff off that thing and rebuild a stronger, more powerful forged motor for not much more than the crate motor...have a talk with Mrs. Mike and show her that it can come back stronger (and far less likely to blow up again) for not much more than you'd spend for the crate engine.

Looking at those pics I've noticed a few things. Looks like all the valves hit the pistons. And it also looks like this wasn't an all of a sudden thing. Looks like it's been going on for some time.

No way was that going on for any extended period of time. First off, his engine would sound like a diesel; 2nd, he'd have experienced a massive loss of power if things were that out of whack...

I'm not here to argue with you by any means, but I know for a fact that you are incorrect. I had a 350 that I had for a spare engine while I build my big cube motor. It had a pretty healthy cam in it (242/248@.050 .600+ lift) and so I fly cut the pistons. Evidently I didn't fly cut them enough. When I pulled the engine out to put my big engine in....I could clearly see where the valves contacted the pistons on a regular basis. Did mine sound like a diesel? Umm, not at all. So that goes to show what you "think" is not always correct. It ran just fine also. 12.05. @117mph on motor with hankook radials. Why didn't it fail? My guess is I didn't give it long enough. Why didn't it run like shit? Because Im guessing contact was only at higher rpm.

Out of curiosity, how many l99's have had a failure like this?
