Thought I'd chime in on this one. I spent three years up in Oshawa helping build the west paint shop. I had the privilege of working with a bunch of the guys who shut down the San Teres (SP, I know, I'm not french), when the rumors started to fly back in 2003-04 about a re-release of the camaro everyone was a buzz about where they would build it, a lot of people thought OKC was a good choice, brand new plant that GM just put a boat load of money into building (twice after the tornado took it apart). The old school GM guys who shut the camaro down sat quitely and said they would never bring the camaro back unless they bring it back in a CAW plant. What I was told is that they shut the plant down in the middle of a union contract and that part of the agreement with the union was that if the camaro was ever brought back it would be build by the CAW.
That stuff aside, I spent time in 7 different GM plants, enough time to have my number on speed dial of the guys who ran the paint shops. Of all the plants I spent time in Oshawa had some of the most prideful workers I had ever seen, the all cared about the work they did. The interesting part was none of them had the union mentality of "they will never shut down this plant we're too important" instead they guys I was working around knew GM only looked at numbers and that their head was on the block if their cars did not sell. The knew that their jobs were on the line if their quality was poor, that's why they repeatedly got the JD powers award.
So I was not surprised when they officially announced the build of the camaro in Oshawa. Of the project team I was one of the only ones that said when they announced the plant closing in late 08 that they would re-tool to begin the camaro build in 09. Wish I would have put money on it now b/c everyone said they would never re-tool a front wheel drive platform plant to build a rear wheel drive car (too much money) and they would never build the camaro as a FWD.

Mike - I thought we discussed this and you agreed to wear an ELVIS uniform -- with Little Bo Peep shoes.....................

Now - SERIOUSLY: the men and women of Oshawa Assembly earned - EARNED - the right to build the Camaro. They take GREAT PRIDE in what they do....and anyone who attended the Camaro Homecoming understands that.

And I could not be prouder of a group of people who put out more than just 'automobiles' - they are building 'dreams!'

So - can we please put this to rest??

Canada rocks!

Mike I am planning on coming next year if there is an event. HOPEFULLY there will be a plant tour, certain events this year wouldn't allow me to. I appreciate the kind words. I just in case you didn't get my point my " CAR" IS ABSOLUTELY FREAKING 463 RWHP of CHEVROLET CAMARO AWESOMENESS

Let's face it, vehicles are made all over the world, with parts coming from all over the world. I'm just proud to say that the Canadian Build Team did a great job on my Camaro!
Yes I so agree, I live 10 minutes from this plant and have MANY friends who work at the Honda plant and they have as much pride in their work as the folks in Oshawa, they love their jobs, and it greatly revitalized a small town. As a matter of fact they are building 3 other car plants here Mercedes, Hyundia, and Volkswagon and rumor has it that another is coming.

I love all the union bashing in this thread. So the CEO's and all the high level managers had nothing to do with the colapse of GM. No it was the little guy trying to do right by his family and go to work everyday. It was the higher ups that agreed and signed off on the contracts the unions got. I can not belive no one blames them. after all they flew down to the capital in private jets to ask the tax payers for money to bail them out and got there bonus money after they got it.... Na they have nothing to do with the problems in the american economy. The average CEO make over 200 times the money thier employees make. The CEO of the company I work for got 24.5 million salary last year. but lets attack and punish the people making 60,000 to 70,000 a year. They do not deserve to make that kind of money. very narrow minded of people point figers at the unions. Rant over

I love my camaro and I am happy it was built in canada the car is great

under the global economy it's nearly impossible to get ANYTHING made in any single country

Well most people know that the majority of large company CEOs are just blook sucking vampires, after they steer one company into the wrong direction they find their BOD friends and get hired again....

but on the other hand, union does drive up the production cost too, doesn't it?

true, They tend to drive up cost, but thats just a part of it. There is all types of factors is production costs. people seem to just focus on the unions, it is kinda funny. It would take me 2 lifetimes to make what our ceo made last year. But they are still the ones that agreed to the contracts with the unions. then cried foul . Truth is all of us would take the best deal they could for what ever job they do. Can not blame someone for trying to get the most they can during negotiations.

I have no problem with camaros/gm trucks made in I also have a 2004 silverado at 115,000 miles and still looking good and running strong also built in canada

To the Op, you didn't have to buy it if you didn't like where it was built. Anyway, I'm upset that I don't have a bigger .... and my wife doesn't look like Pamela Anderson ,but you know what, you got to work with what you got.

And hey, my GTO was built in Australia! Although that did give it a bit of an exotic feel...

I'm totally with you on the take the best deal they could thing, if I can be a CEO and do nothing but blood sucking everyday I will do it for sure

However all the expensive CEO salary, high union wages, etc does drive up the cost like you said and make American made less competitive compared to other nations in a lot of areas, especially those where the raw material only count for a very small part of the cost I guess...
