Punching it off the line is the biggest MPG killer. Do it a couple of times and see the difference yourself on the fuel gauge.
When in stop and go traffic, leave extra room to use as a buffer so you can coast more. Less brake equals less gas. Coasting off ramps when safe to do so is another saver. Driving like a granny can certainly increase MPG, save money and I suppose could be fun to try once in a while but I got my car to tear it up... Most of the time. |

Also not to mention smart driving helps a lot. If you see a red light coming up let off the gas immediately and try to time it so that as you get to the light it turns green. Getting the car moving from a stop is basically the #1 mpg reducing thing you can do. Your goal is to avoid having to stop the car as much as you can.
If you have a regular route to work start learning the traffic light times and figure out where you can avoid having to come to a complete stop and coast more. |

I wholeheartedly agree with other members who've suggested perhaps changing your driving style and tracking your mpg's over the course of several fill-ups.
I've had my 'vert for exactly 8 weeks today. I keep track of my Camaro mileage on mpgtune.com. I'm getting what I'd consider reasonable mpg's with my 2LT manual 6. Compare it with what I was getting with my 2008 Saturn AURA XR (6cyl, DOHC, 252 HP, 6spd auto w. tap shift which I never used) and my gas mileage with the Camaro is excellent. The last 2 or 3 mpg's on my AURA were on a 600 mile roadtrip. If you go down to the bottom of the page to the earliest fill-ups of my AURA, you'll see that with an auto and less HP, driving in the same manner I do my Camaro, approx. 50% hwy and 50% city / suburbia, my Camaro mileage is better than that of my AURA. I believe it's probably a combination of things: more fuel-efficient Camaro engine (SIDI), driving style and engine break-in period. Check out mpgtune.com. It's free to register and it's a simple way to become a little more involved in tracking things involved in the care of your Camaro.

has anybody suggested driving a little slower, not gunning it at lights, and cruising in a higher gear?

I'm getting 24 mpg with mine after a year, avg speed is 35-38 and I don't drive like a grandma all the time. Very little city-driving though.

If you stay within 2k RPM it will improve really fast , if you play with your right foot you will pay for it , is that simple !!!

I used to reset the dic on my old dodge ram hemi and punch it going up hill to watch the mpg drop to 1.3, then I would reset it while coasting downhill and it would go as high as 40.

17600 miles on the car.It doesnt take alot of constant hot rodding to kill the mpg's. My daily is 16 miles in L.A. traffic, 18 mph average and driving for best mpg and I never get more the 16 with mods that should help out a bit. Here's mine at different speeds for reference :
True city stop and go=16 Same but punching it some or tap shifting and revving high=14 Road trip at 75 mph, two people and luggage= 27-28 MPG test doing a short run at 65-68 mph=34 Average for life of car=About 21 |

It always fascinates me that people see an EPA estimate on a window sticker and expect that their car should always produce those numbers. Those numbers are based off of perfect driving conditions and habits. If you're that far below the estimates for your car, then you're driving too hard/fast. Then again, if you're that concerned about fuel economy you should have bought a Sonic or Cruze.

Just do what others have told you to do as far as manually tracking your own mileage.
But really, if you really don't want to do all of that, next time you fill up with gas, reset you AVG MPG and then try your best to drive normally for however long until you have to fill up again. You should see a very nice improvment in your average. I've seen as high as 28mpg average on a good little trip that included hills and turns and driving through a small town or two. My actual average is 22, but then again I tend to get on it for a bit at least once every trip or every other trip lol. Something else you could try eventually is taking her out on the freeway for a good 10 to 20 mile run. When you get up on the freeway reset your avg mpg and then after several miles of driving, if your going 65 or 70 you should see an average in the high 20s at least.
