The problem is you are not shaking the can enough. You really need to continually shake the can or it will not come out smooth, believe me I went through this.

As for thick coats or light coats, makes no difference (I did it both ways) as long as the can is kept well shaken.

Also before you start make sure you turn the can upside down and spray for a second or 2.

I shook both cans very well. In my case they stuff was coming out of the can different. One was much more glossy and smooth and the other very flat and textured. The distance I held the can did not make a difference either.

Another thing I might suggest is that every once in a while you need to turn the can upside down and spray it. This will unclog anything that may have been building up in the nozzle.

Seriously, I rotated the bezels as I applied each coat to avoid that coverage problem but still missed a small patch. But since you can only see it from about an 80 degree angle from 3 inches, I'm not sweating it. From an angle and distance normal people look at things I think they look great. I applied I think 3 light coats about 20 minutes apart. There's really no way, I think, to avoid some appearance of "grainyness," it's not paint but synthetic rubber so it's going to have the same texture as rubber-coated hand tools. I'll post some pics of mine if I can get around my workplace firewall.
Let's try this...

OK if that's what you want. If you want smooth use paint.

Hint: Always warm rattle cans in a small container of hot water. Shake often.
it turned out ok. but I want it to be a little more smother.

I think I'm gonna re paint them with actual paint. or I'll just buy painted ones.
