Military advice
I recently enlisted in the marines and I've been considering getting a new camaro. Maybe not right away but in the near future. I was wondering if there were any military personnel on this forum that could give me some advice on what I should do. Should I buy a camaro when I come back or should I buy it and then drive it. More specifically, I'm in California. I know that the school for intelligence is in Virginia. I was wondering if there were any intel marines that could give some advice on that as well. Would I be able to drive my car on base if I'm even going to be on base for my mos. I know this is very vague but I can ask more specific questions when people respond. Thanks in advance.

Just wait until you get to your actual unit and finish training.

The only time you aren't allowed a car is in Basic Training/Boot Camp. At least that is how it was in the Army. I had a car with me at AIT for my Satcom Training.

I'm dying to get a camaro but I'm sure the future camaros will be just as good if not better. I'm going to be doing intelligence in the marines so I have no idea where I'm actually going to be most of the time.
Man you guys responded so fast. Thanks. Power of the forums eh lol |

In AIT, you are only allowed a vehicle if your training is over a certain amount of time. I believe its somewhere around 30 weeks (for the army at least). Also, the majority of Intel training takes place on Fort Huachuca, AZ. That goes for all branches. So you may want to check on that as well. When i went through intel school, the only branch that wasnt represented was Navy. There were very few of them there. However, all the other branches had a large amount of people at Fort Huachuca. I actually lived right across the basketball court from the Marine Corps barracks. I actually had to pull fireguard duty in there a couple of times.
Anyways, long story short, alot wil ldepend on where you go for training. Fort Huachuca is VERY laid back from what I saw of it (17 weeks and 4 days there). So we had our weekends free and alot of us spent our time around town in Sierra Vista. Some guys had cars and they never got in to any trouble even though they werent authorized since we didnt meet that 30 week mark. All in all, i reccomend waiting until you get back. Definately get a camaro. They are awesome lol. I love mine and will soon be upgrading to an SS once im back from Iraq in a month.

This is pretty off topic but what do you do as an intel mos? I haven't been able to get a decent answer anywhere. Also I'm thinking of doing intel specialist.

Wait to buy the car. First off, you don't know where your ging to be stationed after MOS school. They allow you to pick, but if your choice isn't available they will send you where you are needed. That means you could end up out here where I am. If that happens your brand new Camaro will be sitting somewhere for 2 years being taken care of by your family. Also it will be very hard for you to afford the car. You will not be making much money and you spend a lot of money on military related items you don't get reimbursed for but once a year in the form of a uniform allowance which is $400 and that goes quick. Worry about getting the car after you've settled into your first duty station if you can afford it which will be nearly impossible on a Private/PFC salary. You will be briefed on buying a car and spending money wisely and saving and all that. Listen to every word, believe it or not it's one of very few briefs worth listening to and taking notes on. To answer your main questions though, no you can not have a car during initial training (boot camp, MCT, MOS school). You can have a car at your first duty station if it's not where I'm at or other overseas locations, except Hawaii I believe. My advice is wait, for a long time. Now if your MOS gave you some rediculously insane bonus and you can pay for the car in cash and have money left over, which is very highly unlikely since we are down sizing and they want people out, then by all means get what you want. Good luck, I warn you the Marine Corps is not what you expect, but it's not bad.

From what I know of intel, which is not very much, several things. Gathering intelligence in various ways obviously. They will allow you to grow your hair out and wear civilian clothes and go collect intel that way. Also you could be one of the guys that makes sure military people don't go run their mouths out in town by kind of tricking them into telling you what they do in the military and things like that. People that get caught doing that, even if your job is just a cook or something, get in trouble. You could be a social network monitor as well, meaning you keep an eye on marines on facebook and make sure they don't post shit about missions and such. You could also just be a messenger boy that passes things around the office you work for. There's a few other things the intel guy that held a information safety brief one time bragged about trying to impress us, but we didn't really care LOL.

Im a 35F Intelligence Analyst. What your asking is a pretty broad question because it depends on a variety of things. Where your stationed, what kind of unit your with, how many people you have in your section. Duties can range from light work to very heavy work if you are short on people.
Basically what you are tought in intel school consists of the following: Map Reading Military Symbology Terrain Analysis Threat Analysis Intelligence Preperation of the Battlefield Targeting Packages The list goes on but those are the key points. I think the most interesting part is the targeting packages. Basically, you collect all avaliable intel on a high value tearget (could be an IED manufacturer, all the way up to an Al Qaeda Cell leader) and condensing it down into a report that will tell your infantry troops where he is, how he is protected, his history, his family, and even a prediction of how he will react when a team is sent in for him. You also play a role in deciding whether each target should be captured for interrogation or killed on sight. There are also parts of the job that are highly classified so i cant go in to any of that. Also, Intel MOSs usually get a Top Secret security clearance which is like gold on the civilian side. Its good for about 150k starting sallary at many Private Contracting firms. Food for thought.

I would wait till you get to your unit. Make sure you also let your chain of command know you are going to be buying a new car. Nothing annoyed me more than when a brand new soldier straight out of AIT would show up buy a car and then have money problems because he couldnt pay for the car. Im not saying this will happen to you and I hope it dosnt. Good Luck on your career and welcome to the site.

I was stationed at Norfolk, Va. when I was in the Navy, do yourself a favor when and if you get stationed on a ship for any length of time, by a beater to drive to work and leave the Camaro safe at home.

I agree with waiting... You don't want to be paying for a car that you can't drive and by the time you get to your duty station, you might be able to pick up a cheaper used one.
