I'm more worried about a turbo six or four in a few years. I'll take my gas guzzlin V8 while the pickin is good with any amount of power. The days of plentiful V8s will be over soon. Dont delay, buy today

To certify a new powertrain with the EPA for 650hp for 2013 would mean that GM would have to have it already on the drawing board. Expect to see a bump to 600, and regardless of hp, getting it to the ground is the key. Making the entire package go around a corner is an even bigger challenge. Having 2 million hp that can't hook up is worse than having 50 that can.

I doubt it. But even if it does get a bump for 2013, it won't change how fast a 2012 is so I wouldn't get too caught up in worrying about it.

With 580 HP and a James Bond plate that rotates, the red and blues will never even know what just passed them. LOL. Also has anyone heard that the 1/4 mile times were done on a rolling start?
Yes, but this is nothing new. Usually its called the '1 foot roll out' and its how 1/4 mile times are always quoted. For whatever reason, GM made explicit mention of this 'rolling start' and now people are in a tizzy because of it. But everyone does it, even if they don't know they're doing it. Its just how things are timed at the drag strip.

I say leave the horsepower alone and drop 600lbs. Now we have an interesting fight on our hands. Ford would'nt be expecting that one. GM I've just foretold your future.

Link? I've been a member of Corvette Forum for ten years and am on there daily. And this is the first I've heard of this. I know for a fact nothing of the sort has been announced by GM.

And no,I don't drive recklessly. But there are plenty of opportunities to roll into the throttle on a daily basis. I've been DDing Z06's for the last five years & beat mine like it owes me money every day.

Ford won't be expecting it because its not possible. Well, I shouldn't say not possible ... just about anything is possible when you throw enough money at it. But to do it without gutting the car would mean replacing all the steel with carbon fibre or aluminum, and all the plastic with carbon fibre. After that, you'd probably have to try and get a hold of some light weight electronics and interior pieces.

Now, the question becomes ... how much are you willing to pay for such a car? Toyota more or less tried the above formula with their Lexus LFA and it still comes in at nearly 3600 lbs. Keep in mind, thats a $370,000 2 seater that produces far less torque. And you say GM should be offering a 4 seat torque monster that weighs some 50 lbs less? Their engineers could do it, they're smart cookies over there. They just can't do it for $54,000 though. Maybe for $540,000, but at that price nobody would buy the thing except for a few collectors with money to burn.

But more importantly (in reference to the overall question of improving the ZL1 for 2013), it remains to be seen which car is faster & better handling: 2012 ZL1 or the 2013 GT500. And whichever one is quicker, I'm positive that the ZL1 will be the better car.

This!

Therein lies the futility of trying to prove one car is better than the other. If the ZL1 proves to have better performance numbers than the GT500, the diehard Ford fans are still going to believe they have the better vehicle. Likewise, if the GT500 outperforms the ZL1, the GM guys are still going to believe their vehicle is the better car.

The only people who will be influenced by the numbers are the moderates who really don't understand what those numbers mean or simply people looking to drive the car that has bragging right over the other based simply on numbers.

IMO GM should keep the zl1 at $54.9K, and make either a modest uptick in power later, or save the drastic change for the next generation.

Fact is if ZL1 for 2013 makes more power, price goes up. Actually, I think the 2013 price will be higher even if the power stays the same. I think 2012's are artificially priced low and this will change with each year they will go up in price.

Why would anyone hope for a hp/tq increase "for warranty purpose"?

The OEM might limit hp/tq "for warranty purpose",

But I can't see anyone wishing for more power, "for warranty purpose"

I have a friend who wind tests cars for GM and I posted that question to him. Let's just say he beat around the bush in a BIG WAY and did not answer my question. I personally don't think they would do that.

First, it seems everyone, or at least many, have forgotten the simple fact that GM has already bumped the HP from 556 to 580. That's a pretty big jump for a 50 state emissions, fully warrantied (5 year 100,000 mile) engine.

You are almost asking for GM to give you an LSA for LS9 money. And the big problem with just dumping the ZR1 engine in is simply the cost of the hand built Wixom engine.

Not saying it can't happen, never say never. But don't underestimate the work that has already been done to get 580.
