Smells kinda fishy if you ask me. But again didn't see it in person
Yo nineball go get your bug and tar remover and report back

Hmm, I have an idea.. Has anyone here restored or repaired the front end of some first gens? If so did anyone find any indication of stress in the metal around the corners on the front end?

I'm thinking this could be almost a design flaw.. and it could be that metal front ends hid this problem.

Funny you mention "strip of tar". Originally, we thought it was from a distance...until we looked closer at it. It is a crack. It goes all the way through also, not just a paint crack.

All of you that keep saying "well, GM tested a lot and this never came up."

Do a search on C6 roof skins flying off, or 98 LS1's bending pushrods easily, or the 1st gen CTS-V busting rear axles, etc... Not everything is discovered during testing. Consumers find a lot of flaws in the first few years of a production vehicle.

I'm wondering if anything like this was also found on Shelbys and other Mustangs during the intial 05MY runs? As said before, it could be a flaw inherent in the design of that nose style.

Maybe the sense of speed is warped in a video and on a track, but I would guess they were under 100 there...

I didn't read thru this entire thread -- but I can tell you that the car has been tested at high speeds.

Exactly, that's why I never buy a first run of any vehicle.

Thats right. Get your self out of this mess by letting me buy your car! Then you can wait and watch as I and many others like me suffer through the hell that is new model vehicle ownership. Then when the bugs are worked out you can buy knowing that your ownership experience will be a happy and stress free one. Where as I will probably be dead of cardiac arrest from all the stress.

PM me now to take advantage of this great deal!
Pfft! Don't waste your time with him, folks. I can offer you an even better deal: I will take the car off your hands, no charge! That's right, no payment involved...just hand it off to me and I'll make sure to help work the bugs out.

Don't wait, act now. Who knows when you'll get this kind of offer again!!

Another interesting thing I notice from the pictures is that the crack remains "open" when the car is not moving. This means that there was stress in that area when the car was built, either from the molding process or perhaps the nose was pulled up and then locked down in that spot in order to properly match the hood line.
I'm sure a bunch of GM engineers are losing some sleep after seeing those pictures.

Is it possible that a supplier cut back on either the quality of the plastics or thickness in order to save a few bucks?

This could easily be a QC issue that definitely needs to be looked into. I hope you pass this on to the powers that be.

Anyone have any recent photos of the pace car used at Daytona ? .If this is in fact a result of high speeds and not something the tech didn't want to admit to,it would surely show up on that car.
