Hmm, I have an idea.. Has anyone here restored or repaired the front end of some first gens? If so did anyone find any indication of stress in the metal around the corners on the front end?
I'm thinking this could be almost a design flaw.. and it could be that metal front ends hid this problem. |

Funny you mention "strip of tar". Originally, we thought it was from a distance...until we looked closer at it. It is a crack. It goes all the way through also, not just a paint crack.
All of you that keep saying "well, GM tested a lot and this never came up." Do a search on C6 roof skins flying off, or 98 LS1's bending pushrods easily, or the 1st gen CTS-V busting rear axles, etc... Not everything is discovered during testing. Consumers find a lot of flaws in the first few years of a production vehicle.

Maybe the sense of speed is warped in a video and on a track, but I would guess they were under 100 there...

I didn't read thru this entire thread -- but I can tell you that the car has been tested at high speeds.

Well this sucks. Now, if I have to out run the cops or chase somebody down like Vin Diesel I have to worry about my bumper cracking??

Another interesting thing I notice from the pictures is that the crack remains "open" when the car is not moving. This means that there was stress in that area when the car was built, either from the molding process or perhaps the nose was pulled up and then locked down in that spot in order to properly match the hood line.
I'm sure a bunch of GM engineers are losing some sleep after seeing those pictures. |

This could easily be a QC issue that definitely needs to be looked into. I hope you pass this on to the powers that be. |

Anyone have any recent photos of the pace car used at Daytona ? .If this is in fact a result of high speeds and not something the tech didn't want to admit to,it would surely show up on that car.
