Ya' know the more i look at that crack, especially the one on driver side with the cracks underneath, the more i think it was some kind of trauma like a hit, or somebody lifting up on leading edge of the fascia lip on purpose.

OK, I read most of this thread, but 11 pages in one day makes it difficult to read every post thoroughly.

Now, potentially this is an isolated incident on one car. Maybe it wasn't caused by aerodynamic forces (speed+headwind). Maybe it was bashed or otherwise mishandled. Maybe this one piece just had a manufacturing glitch. Those are all possibilities.

On the other hand, aerodynamic forces ripping this thing apart is also a very real possibility. Notice we have mountains of evidence showing that if any other consideration conflicted with design, design won. That's why we have bad visibility, a goofy oversized steering wheel, a shift knob that was designed by someone who never once saw a human hand grasp a knob, and a front fascia that has some properties that are by nature not aerodynamic. A wide, open, inset grill with an overhang is just asking for drag issues. Surprisingly the Camaro's cd is pretty nice, but you have to imagine there are downsides to that design.

And if this is a problem, what will the fix be? If they don't ignore it and let it be just another known quality problem, they will probably make a beefier front fascia which equals even more weight. As if this thing wasn't already grossly overweight. When I complained about the weight, I had so many people here tell me that the weight was so high because this car was engineered to handle all the power and speed it would encounter. Er, well, I guess we can scratch that explanation. So any other reasons why it is so overweight?

I am not sweating it, I am sure after this thread there will be much ado at the GM plant to re-test.

To me it looks like the mounting bolts were over torqued. Can we find out if the tuner removed the fascia to do R&D on a body kit???

I am guessing that is exactly what happened. There really should not be that much up-force on the front fascia since the Grill is so wide open into the radiator area. Although in the corners are the headlights.....maybe too much overhang on the front was not such a great idea........must be a wind catch to some extent.

I guess time will tell.

And for those thinking the second model year is always better......NOT TRUE. The 08 Saturn Sky had more issues than the 07. They changed Brake Pumps and the second year had a ton of issues.........so leave your orders in and deal with your issues....if any. I have had very few issues with my SKY and the dealer took care of it in no time!

I did not want to sound like a kool aid drinking fanboy so I stopped at dealer and played with the facia. You can grab it right over the bowtie and lift the car up to the point of flexing the shocks with absolutly no give or flex. As you move along the lip there is no flex or movement. That would dispell the BS that this is high speed caused because I applied way more lift than wind lift on a surface would have caused. So then I applied downward pressure and it was actually much stronger and more solid feeling in that direction. Makes sense since air pressure would actually be pushing the front end down. When looking at the dynamics of the facia and the damage shown in the picture I would suggest that this was caused by severe collision with something down low. Perhaps smashing the nose into a curb or on the far up side of a dip. This would transmit torque up to where the damage is shown and cause a pulling action at that point. The front is pretty low and I would think that caution should be taken going thru dips or parking to avoid damage. Not unusual for a car like this. The Vette has about the same front clearance and many Vette owners report the caution they use to approach curbs and dips. To keep lift from under a car at top speeds the front must be low. I would suggest along with Milk....Read the entire thread.....check a car out yourself....and dont panic over an issue that was reported second hand. 9Ball saw the damage but he was not there when it occured....He jumped to conclusions as to its cause and there is absolutly no high speed air pressure evidence that caused the cracks......Use some common sense please.

This will be the second set of pics tomorrow of this happening to another car

Umm what if you would have cracked the bumper? i hope there is not more people like you going up to dealers cars and trying to break them, what if you just weakend that bumper for a future customer? im sorry man i dont agree with what you did that is just wrong. nobody knows all the facts about this but you definitely step beyond the line trying to break a car on the lot... you can tug on the car all you want you do not know for sure if it was or wasnt and you also dont know if there was a fix applied...

to everything except the weight issue, which has been discussed many times, and the answer has to do with safety issues.
GM is aiming for 5-star crash test rating, and will settle for nothing less.
All the added weight is from things like airbags, seatbelts, and electronic things to keep your car from loosing control and to keep you and your family safe in case of an accident.

When you grabbed the front did you shake it violently? The fact that you did this means nothing. You couldn't possibly have put the kind of pressure and vibration that 155 mph wind would.

That being said, I don't think for a minute that this damage was caused by speed. It is pure speculation. I'm not concerned by this at all. Somebody made a mistake somewhere.

I hate to take this off topic but that's not a reason at all. The Mustang gets 5 star safety ratings and it is much, much lighter. 4,000 lbs does not equal "safe". There are plenty of lighter cars, including RWD sporty coupes, that weigh less and are perfectly safe. I'm not buying that at all.

IRS is pretty heavy too. But it allows for a smoother, less bumpy ride.
