Yes that's true for the V8, but the OP stated he has the V6.

I know this has been brought up several times.

Premium lowers knock regard so you may get a few ponies with it. That's all it does. How much, I don't know.

Premium doesn't have more detergent, burn cleaner or increase engine life more than regular. KR sensors ensure this.

I put premium in mine. Less than 2 bucks a week for extra ponies if fine by me. Else,

For me and my mods, I use 91 (highest I find local).
The improved MPGs pay for the difference in price and the improved performance (very noticable) would be worth it if it didn't. win-win (for me)

Ours is generally 30 cents more, but the Exxons here put it on sale every Tuesday 20 cents off; then it's lower than 91 and about 6 cents above regular.

Anyhoo, I'd say if the engine is audibly knocking on recommended grade gas, have a mechanic look at it or see if there's an ECM update (had one on our '10 Equinox, made a huge difference). In any case, no one engine is the same as another, ambient conditions/fuel quality matter, YMMV, etc etc...

87 is fine here. And I just paid $3.20 a gallon, which is a great improvement.

Still more than the $1.46 at the end of the Clinton years. The next guy and his buddies fixed it so we would Never have cheap gas again.

Ditto, my car performs excellent on 87 Sunoco.

(11.3:1) I wouldnt consider a low compression engine. As far as need, that is dependent on use. If 87 octane does in fact cause knock then a higher octane should reduce this. Most people buy the V6 Camaro for gas mileage, fine stick with 87. For those of us not worried about .20 or .40 cents then its the top grade. I say thank you to the electric car owners. More gas for me.
