Vinyl Stripes, problem down the road?

I was just wanting to ask about the rally stripes on the new Camaro's. I have worked in a sign shop and own my own plotter as well. I know the life on the very best vinyl is 7-10 years. My question is then what? If you remove them the paint will have faded so bad it would look terrible. Would you then have to get a new set of stripes? I just wonder why they did not paint the stripes and charge a little more. It really would have been worth it in the down run. Not to mention how easy vinyl scratches....

Thoughts????

I saw a 1977 Trans Am (Smokey and the Bandit Edition) the other day and the factory vinyl decals (to include the HUGE Firebird decal) looked great. To bad the rest of the looked worn and faded. Brought back many fond memories as I owned a 75 and 78 T/A.

I have no fears about how the factory vinyl will hold up.

I have a 30th anniversary Camaro with the orange stripes and got a nasty scratch on one. I can no longer get a replacement so the only thing I can do is get an expensive paint job. So yes, there is a possible problem down the road. Get a copy of the stripes now, while you still can.

I've had this very same concern, but that's because the factory installed decals on my current car were peeling when I got the car (@ 3 years old). I swore I'd never own another car with decals for this very reason, but I don't know how anyone would want to drive a muscle car w/o some type of added sex appeal that the stripes provide. That's just my opinion, but I also wasn't around to see the days of the "classics." On a side note, I also swore I'd never own another Yellow car, but we see how that worked out... I've got my Yellow Ford Focus, before gas prices went crazy I had a Yellow Dodge Rumblebee. My choice wasn't hard to make! =P

You have to worry about reds oranges and yellows fading in the sun the most, not sure if the IOM stripes would fade being that they have a metallic finish. As for cracking an peeling, usually holds up pretty good in my experience....

One thing I'd worry about with a RY or VR car with black or CGM stripes would be if I ever did take them off down the road, the paint under them will likely be brighter, assuming the car sat in the sun most of it's life.

I have black racing strips and they faded very quickly. Idk why but my car isn't even 2 years old and they look terrible. They completely faded and oxidized

I've used this on a matte black harley & on my stripes. It seems to work very well.

Whatever you do, you have to be careful not to get regular car polish on the stripes. That will haze them.

It would depend on how long. When I took the factory black stripes off the hood and deck lid on my 2010 Rally Yellow after 2 1/2 years being outside 24/7 there was absolutely no fading that was noticeable.

One thing about vinyl stripes is that car wash soaps and cleaners are very hard on them. Avoid strong cleaning soaps at all cost.

Most stripes still show available (thru Vintage parts) . Only one N/A is the one on the frt bumper cover.
