no, it does run differently. how much is a matter of debate though. but any high compression motor will benefit from a higher octane.

Thats what I understood too, but I guess we are outnumbered by others.

I would guess ethanol blend. All 89 here in Iowa is the cheapest because it's all 10% blend.

Yeah, it's about $1.50 difference if I put 15 gallons in. I'm just use to putting 87 in since that's what the manual says it should run on. I might give 89 a whirl and see if I notice any difference. However I'm going to take a look and see if the 87 is blended. I'm pretty positive the 89 is blended with ethanol, maybe that's why it's cheaper?

Either way gas is too damn high in my neck of the woods. Glad I don't have to commute far!

I run 87, but top off the tank with a little Everclear.

Nets me about 103 octane.

I am soooooo sirius.

edit: Obviously putting 91 in SS/ZL1 minimum and 87 in LS/LT minimum

There are also many other factors when fueling up like brand and region. There are some articles on Shell V-power vs BP ultimate, but gas is different based upon region as well.

(Not sure if this helps, just spitting out some knowledge)
At any driving......we see this while logging these cars for tuning. The amount of timing retart due to spark knock (detonation).

The owners manual for all, including the caddys and the buicks say 87, but that is for marketing only. You can run 87 just fine as the ECU/PCM pulls timing, but you wont ne running at optimine.

Your talking with a few of us here that tune, build, mod, and build/rebuild these motors constantly....and are the leaders in product R&D and I can attest, any motor with 11:1 cr or above runs better, delivers more power, and better fuel economy on 921-93 than 87.

True and accurate.

Agree 100%. Not many have done as much as far as understanding these engines in every aspect, and gretch has the cashed checks & receipts to prove it.

I dont think the dynos #'s , and the tuning logs fall under placebo...

93 is a definite bump for mpg. At least 2-3 on highway driving.

I always used 91-93 too (LLT). I tried 87 a couple of times and the car didn't run as smoothly. The difference was very obvious. Much more noticeable than let's say, a ported TB, so no placebo here.

93 always will make your car run smoother!

The explanation of what octane does (reduce detonation/knock) is right in line with what they're saying. Any increase in power/MPG is because the ECM doesn't have to adjust for detonation by pulling timing, resulting in more efficient combustion with the higher octane fuels.

So if I start running 93 octane in my LFX do I need to do a fuse pull or something to reset the ECM (like the fuse pull in the SS)????
