You sound like you know what you are talking about. I originally bought both the synthetic and non-senthetic fluids and asked for advice which to use. I didn't realize it was shipped w fluid. Recommendations was to keep what's in it.

What fluid do you recommend?

I actually have not had any problems with my diff yet and still have not changed the fluid for that very reason. Read this thread and you will get all you need to know about the fluids with the GM part numbers.

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262301

I'm planning on changing my fluid after Texas mile in Oct.and from what I have read on the above thread I will use the GM specific fluid for ZL1.

Yes, that gives me the maximum acceleration to 200. My car hits the limiter at 202 mph in 6th gear. I actually don't think I have enough power to get to 200 in a standing mile but it will be very close.

I don't claim to be a pro, but I think you'll be disappointed w/3.73 gears in the mile. 2.9x or 3.27 would be more desirable... I think just like the 1/4, you want to finish the mile running out 4th gear, but worse case 5th. I'm pretty sure you wont be able to run out 6th and if you do have enough power, I hear there is a good chance you'll strip 6th...not many teeth...

I'm trying to find 3.27 to and plan to run out 5th. But the fastest mile cars are geared in the 2.x.

Regardless, it will be a blast!

ZR1 ratios and 3.42 and top speed in 5th at 7000rpms is crazy, I think this will be about 200mph.

ZR1 ratios AND 3.73 isn't a good idea. The stock ratios are much better with the 3.73

what fluid did you run in the diff when it was installed???? the wrong fluid can be bad news.

if this diff is slipping

1. you got a bum limited slip
2. you fluid is not correct.

mine never slips. it is so tight it will chatter at times from not slipping(need to add new fluid or more modifier)

I have never changed clutches in this new a diff but worst case that is the issue.

I'm pretty deep into 4th in the quarter mile. I max out 5th around the half. Gives me a half mile to hit the limit in 6th. When I discussed changing the gear sets for 5 & 6, the transmission builder who did the job recommended I go with ZR1 gears. Apparently they are significantly thicker and don't fail in 5th and 6th like the other higher gears do. They also have lower ratios so this limits the top end. Unless I'm bumping the limiter real early, I think this is the best possible ratio to ensure I have a chance to hit 200. The automatic rear end and corresponding ratio swap is the next choice if I feel I need more speed. I will just have to see what happens.

I'm planning to change the fluid and see if that helps. It came with fluid, so I didn't put any in.

I missed you had a custom transmission...one thing I'm missing. I look forward to seeing you out there. And best of luck.

There is a link to a thread up a few post that cover everything about fluid brand. I don't think fluid is your problem.

The question about why you need to heat them up was because you said you "can't get them to break free". If that's statements correct, then you can't get any better traction.

If you are having problems doing a burnout, I think there are a number of threads giving different techniques. Maybe you don't have the traction control disabled...

Tires are stock GY at @25 psi. Tires spinn
the first 60' before I get descent traction. No smokey type burnout with the stock tires. When I change to MT drag radials I just figured i'd need to heat them up in the water box to get the most traction off the line.

Ok, fluid changed. Now I just need to make it back out to the track to test. Maybe November... I'm about to swap out a SS automatic diff back in to run the Texas mile.
