Yea it's been tried. The USB port doesn't put out enough power to run external hard drives. Also the car can only index a max of 2,500 songs though the USB port and you can fit that many on a 8 gig thumb drive.

XM so far has been the worst quality in mine. Of course, I live less than two miles from the radio station I listen too so that might have something to do with it.

My only gripe with the usb/ipod is not even the usb, its the steering wheel controls. My
2k Impala steering wheel controls have more function.

Just an FYI- I can run a hard drive with my Cobalts USB, so maybe just some drives don't works as well?

I've noticed this too. I get a lot of tune out, which is really bizarre for the Seattle Metro area. XM also will not pick up a signal in my garage... in tunnels... on the ferry.

Not to mention... Im not entirely thrilled with the stations XM has to offer. The Boneyard is about the only station I'd listen to, but even still Im not into old metal anymore. I'd rather listen to newer alternative, without all the pappy crap.

HD Radio would have been a much better alternative than XM radio.

I had Sirius for the longest time, so I'm used to it cutting out in tunnels, etc.
My XM sometimes though...the volume will just decrease for no reason. In the wide open too, its not like there are any obstructions. Never had that problem with Sirius. I was using an aftermarket reciever though. So I'm not sure if its the quality of the service or the quality of the components.

IPOD

Love the sound and control of the IPOD! I am an old Fart now But over my liftime have spent a fortune on car stereo and the BA rocks! It lacks a little bottom end but not enough in my mind to install a sub. It has enough to sound good but not to attract the hot chick in the car 3 lanes over..
