Somebody that's looking to save money at the gas pump, isn't going to spend $40k on a car.

Good grief.

a lot of people havent heard about this car.... then again, a lot of people havent heard about the camaro either.

but the Cavuto comment about battery fires.... makes me want to do a burnout on his face.

this is the same anti GM blabber that NBC did back in '93 with the fuel tank explosions.... (that they rigged)

The Volt's operating costs are around 3 cents a mile. Compare that with your average gasoline-powered car.

(^) That's right. Crunch the numbers, and you'll find that the vehicles real cost of ownership over a ten year period is not different (in fact, I believe it is LOWER) than a $25,000, say...Malibu.

But we must keep in mind that the Volt's goal was never to save the buyer money. It was to create a car that doesn't need to use petroleum. It was to build an eco-friendly car that doesn't sacrifice style, driving dynamics or functionality. It was to build the ultimate car in efficiency to prove that GM can not only build fuel-efficient cars, but that they can build them the BEST. I think they succeeded in leaps and bounds!

Not to mention that a top of the line prius costs $32,520.

The Volt will be a better car than the Prius to start with, at least thats the goal. What I mean is that in terms of features, performance, comfort, ride, and all those other things that people value in a car besides fuel economy are all supposed to be better than the prius, justifying several thousand dollars worth of increased cost.

Also, does anyone remember a few years ago when the Prius came out? How it was dismissed because it was a $20k economy car? Now the Prius has 50% of the hybrid market and only gone up 10% in price while inflation says it should have been over twice as much.

I feel compelled to mention the accusation from a former employee that the Japanese gov't actually funded the majority of the Prius's development. GM doesn't have such an advantage.....

Yes the Volt will be expensive. Every new technology is, and that's the key phrase: New technology. Expect the same people who had to have the first DVD player or the first Xbox 360 to buy a Volt. Hell, a grassroots-level site about the Volt already has its own waiting list for people who want one regardless of cost.

Voltec will be filtered into numerous other GM products, from Cadillac to another Chevrolet. That will also decrease the overall cost of the Volt by spreading the overall cost of the platform and powertrain around.

Its all relative.

For example, lets say you spend $30 a week on gas. Thats $1560 the Volt saves you a year. Over the life of a 5 year loan, thats $7800.

If the Volt is $40k, minus the 7800 saved on gas and the 7500 tax break, it brings the price of the car to $24700.

And personally, I feel I'm lowballing like crazy saying $30 a week. Most people probably pay closer to $50.

The biggest thing is being responsible enough to apply the money saved on gas to paying off the car. As long as you can do that, I feel the Volt is the best option in its class.

The biggest problem really is finding a way for people in apt housing to charge the car. But that might allready be solved. Don't forget the money that was set aside to create green jobs. Designated parking and parking meter-like charging stations that were wired into each separate housing unit would take care of that.

Cities like NYC pose the biggest problem...but how many people living in NYC really own a car anyway?
