Nice! I won't be going that big. I was planning on keeping this and getting a 2017 SS but who knows... maybe I'll get me a 2.0T next time.

Ok, I got the timing chains and heads off today. Things looked a lot better up there than I expected, the cylinder walls don't even look that scared up. The block is definitely ruined but I think the heads are fine. The engine seized because of a chunk of rod that was stuck between the crank weight and the block. Once I knocked that out the engine turned over fine, all 5 cylinders.

The piston that broke is still intact and has the top ring land all still there. Everything from the second ring down is gone including the wrist pin. The cylinder walls didn't really look that bad. There are chunks broke out at the bottom from rod breaking probably but everywhere there is ring contact looks pretty good considering.

Speculation...?

Heads. The cylinder that went is the one missing a spark plug.

Only thing I can think of is detonation, the piston opposite of the failure has white pits on it at the edges.

My guess. Pre detonation. Smacking on the cylinder wall and breaking the skirt then just going from there to the wrist pin.

I'm not sure detonation was the cause of the catastrophic failure, even though there might be small signs of it. I was off yesterday so I'll try to get the rest of the pistons out today and take some more pics.

Got the car back together and pushed outside. I think I'm going to just take it home and put it in the garage for awhile... It's sad. Car looks cool like this though, like a Camaro ralley car!

This is the #2 piston/rod, the one directly across from the bad one. Not a lot of detonation here, it's a little cleaner at the edges but ZERO metal errosion. I see no errosion in the failed piston either. More to come...

#6 has the pitting I was talking about, but could also be the camera angle.

Was #1 the one you had injector problems with?

All the other pistons look about the same as #2 except one. #6 cylinder had a lot more carbon/caked oil on the top of the piston than the others. I already knew that cylinder was getting oil in it somehow from the plugs. #6 plug was always darker than the others and had oil on the threads. Guess it was the rings. Half the pistons ring lands are clean and the other half are not.

Below are two pictures of the same piston just turned 180 degrees.

Third is an old pic I had of the spark plugs last time I changed them.

Yes #1 was the cylinder that had the injector failure. I wonder if it got hurt trying to compress all that fuel. There was quite the pool in there.

I've put 5,000 miles on the car since then.

Might have been just enough to shorten its lifespan to where extra boost popped it.

Better shot of #6, doesn't look as bad in that picture. I figure it would be worse with pump gas but these direct injection engines are awesome.

It's amazing how light this bare engine block is.

Might have to turn it into a man cave table.
