Are they right and is it a warranty violation for another establishment to change out the fluid?[/QUOTE]

No, anyone can change the gear lube. Just make sure the right stuff is used. Synthetic 75w90 with limited slip additive. If you want to be extra sure you have the right stuff, just pick it up at any dealer's parts dept. The part numbers are in your owner's manual.

But a much cheaper route is Royal Purple Max Gear or Mobile 1 or .... name your favorite synthetic gear lube. I know the RP already contains the LS additive, so that makes it easy and all you need is 1 qt.

The benefit is the rear diff clutches working better with fresh lube and additive. Clutch type diffs wear out the LS additive pretty quick. They also shed a ton of clutch debris when new, which is why the old lube on a new car will look pretty mucky. If not changed, sometimes LS diffs can get noisy on turns/popping or the clutches not grabbing and giving a 1 wheel burnout.

Incidentally, I have the automatic. I wonder if the dirty fluid is manual only?

Mine is an A6 like yours !! The dirty look was very fine metal shavings, that's why it needs to be replaced and with the correct stuff to maintain warranty.

This is how they describe it on their website:

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid.

Do you have a link to the GM Approved List for all the fluids we use?

Visit page 10-7 in your owners manual.

You CAN tell a difference if the additive isn't used. The fifth gen SS is one of those high performance cars it is talking about in that last sentence.

Update: I had it changed last week, the mechanic said the fluid was fine. I still feel it was worth the $34 after all I've heard about dirty after-breakin differential. Wonder why some do & some don't? I broke it in *fairly* hard....oh well. It was completely worth it for peace of mind. Thanks to all.

According to my local GM parts pro, GM ALREADY ADDS the friction modifier to the recommended gear oil. I used AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 and a bottle of modifier because it isn't specifically made for GM. Changed mine at 1500 miles,,,dirty but no shavings that I could see. Also did oil and filter at 600 miles. She is in hibernation until spring.
