The car ain't there. <sigh>

I guess I could take your next suggestion and try Becky. Maybe I will do that later on, but somehow, I have a feeling that she is going to come up with the same thing.

Jerrold, sounds like you have a tough one. Thanks for asking, and when you find your car, I'd also check the tires for evidence of use/wear.

Have you tried Googling the VIN#? When I was looking for used cars this would produce interesting results - saw how some cars transferred from auction to dealer to another dealer.

I'd talk with BeckyD@rodgerschevrolet.com, she is nothing less than phenomenal and really knows how the system works.

Looking forward to hearing how this goes for you, please keep us posted.

And, they insisted that the car that is delivered will have the same VIN as the car that I am expecting to purchase. So, in short, every tracking mechanism that I have looked at up to this point - from Chevrolet's own order tracking page to Carfax - is incorrect, according to the dealer.

How could this happen? I have no idea. I do know that the first thing that I plan to check when this vehicle arrives at the dealer is the VIN - and the second thing that I look at will be the odometer.

Thanks to everyone for your replies and advice. It is all very much appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion. Googling the VIN does produce one hit that leads to the dealer's website where they list new vehicles for sale. My car is in that list; however, when I click on the link for that particular car, it comes up as "This vehicle has already been sold. Please click here for additional vehicles that may interest you, etc. etc....". I asked the dealer about this, and they have insisted that the car (and this VIN) has been listed this way because it has been earmarked for me, and that the vehicle is "mine", even though I only have money down at this point and the sale has not actually transpired.

I don't know if this is SOP at car dealerships, but it certainly is an anxiety-inducing practice - especially when the salesman calls you to say "we are looking for your car and also have GM investigating the status of it" after you have already tracked it using several methods that all indicate that the car has already been delivered, is offered for sale and/or has already been sold. I honestly don't know why the car would need to be listed publicly on their website in the first place, if (as they claim) I have first dibs on it before they would sell it to anyone else.

I'm still giving the dealer the benefit of the doubt at this point. I can only hope that this is either an administrative or delivery-related error of some sort, and that they will soon be presenting me with a car having the same birth certificate as the one that I have ordered. VINs are magical that way...

(BTW, the main thing that has been holding me back from checking this with Becky is that it has been mentioned in that thread that she can only check status codes up to 3800. I don't want to needlessly take up any of her time, since she obviously already has plenty of other vehicles to check on.)

No need. The car was delivered today, and is now sitting comfortably in my driveway, where it belongs (until I go out and drive it again, which will happen any minute now). Just like that, it's all behind me now...

Congratulations on your new car. That had to be a bit nerve-wracking! Did they ever find out what the 'mistake' was?

That's the first time I heard of this type of problem... I wonder what really happened?
