Well I am going to run it to 5K and see how it is doing. Right now car sounds like it is running smoother and she raps up quicker than she did with Mobil 1. I just wanted to try it to see if I like it and find out what others think that HAVE USED IT. Not the guys that just want to come in and knock it and have never used it.

I won a box of Royal Purple oil as a door prize at one of the car shows I went to this year. I'm still unsure if I want to use this in my Camaro.

i haven't tried it in the engine but i did swap the tranny fluid to RP. I was not impressed with it and it exaggerated the notchy third gear feel. Change back to factory fill after i blew a trans cooler line and blew out lots of fluid in the process! I also swapped the diif fluid and couldnt tell any difference. I guess anything in the diff is better than the muck that came out at 7500 miles!

I used to have Royal Purple in my Colorado before I traded it in. Just got the Camaro Wednesday so I have time before doing an oil change.

I had read that Mobil 1 used to be fully synthetic like Royal Purple and Amsoil but when the government allowed blended oils to be called s"yntheitc", Mobil changed Mobil 1 to a blend. That was a few years ago, so this might not be the case now. Regardless, all tests I have ever seen rank Amsoil #1. I have seen mixed results for Mobil 1 and Royal Purple, with more having Mobil 1 testing slightly better. I was running RP until yesterday, my local shop didn't have any RP 5W-30 so I went with Mobil 1.

Some of Mobil 1's and Royal Purple's oils are a blend of Group III, Grp IV, and Grp V (esters). Usually it is there flag ship oils, M1 0w40 + M1 15w50; RP 0w40 + RP 5w40. There may be others that contain Grp IV + V but I'd have to research some more. Those are just from memory. Most of their oils, along with almost all oil suppliers, are Grp III. Usually 5w30 is almost all Grp III with a spec of Grp IV. 5w30 is not a Robust oil for Any manufacture, exception to Redline and a few other Boutique suppliers. Most of AMSoil is Grp III. Some of their Signature series contains Grp IV. I don't believe any AMSoil motor oil contains Grp V. M1 0w40 is a much better choice of lubricant than M1 5w30 in a stock and modded Camaro SS. Once you start modding the engine heavily (supercharger - turbo) then you can play with 5w40's, 15w50's, ect.. |

Group IV oils are much better for longer drain intervals. Group V oils perform very well in higher temps and constant high rpm conditions (I.E. air cooled or race engines), but group V oils do not have the longevity of Group IV oils. Nothing on the market right now is better than a PAO with a bit of Ester. |

Have a link? (not from amsoils marketing websites..) I could be wrong. I was wrong ![]() Maybe my next oil change will be AMSoil. I wish they had a 0w40. Their signature seems to be Grp IV + V. You are correct sir. Well done. Last edited by pdesanctis; 08-02-2011 at 11:41 AM. |

Biggest difference i've seen using a good synthetic oil like royal purple is when you got 220K+ miles on an engine and it's not burning oil.
