With chrome, it's tricky. Some wheels have some of the cheapest crap for chrome that you'll ever see and they'll start peeling and rusting too once the chrome is broken. They are also vulnerable to harsh cleaners. The only wheels that you can do this too with no issues whatsoever are polished aluminum that are not clear coated. Those wheels have to be constantly polished in order to shine and that's why this repair is not volatile to them. They are a PITA to maintain and that's why they came out with brushed aluminum clear coated wheels, which is what is found on most quality new cars today..
