I'm sure it comes from the factory with the required fluid, but the manual itself (was just looking at it yesterday) says to add the friction modifier if you're changing it out.

That just gives you:

Rear Differential Fluid 75W-90 Limited Slip to GM Specification 9986226.
GM Part No. U.S. 89021677 and Friction Modifier 1052358,
in Canada 89021678 and Friction Modifier 992694.

It does not give you brands.

I have some Castrol 75w-90 Synthetic gear oil that I need to check before I change mine.

Ok, My input.... I have the "extended service care package thing" or what ever you call. It is to pay for the oil changes and things that the GM warentee does not cover. That being said, I asked about changing my Manual Tranny fluid and or the rear end fluid. The CHEVY dealer down here said they would not change it. And if ANYONE does, including another Chevy dealer or me, it WILL void the warentee. I followed up with this information with the CHEVY EXecutive office. they researched it and said it would void my warentee.

Bill Baranowski.
JUST tell you chevy dealer that the rear end is making noises. they should change the fluid then. no issues with warentee.

That's because, iirc, the only "certified" gear oil is GM-spec. You can put other stuff in there, and I'm sure it'll work fine...But if there's ever a problem and the dealer finds out -- whoosh goes your warranty coverage.

Engine oils are different but must meet the GM dexos requirements.

Talked to the gm parts guy and he said the gm lube has the additive already, he said no need for the friction modifier, he told me to come by and read the bottle if i like. Have you all seen the gm bottle?

Just changed my rear end fluid and it was really easy compared to my 4th gen. It sure was dirty. I had 1000 miles on the car.
