Borla S-type for L99
Not sure how many of you have that setup, but I am looking to pick up the axle back for the L99.
I love this car, but I am not too mod crazy. I don't see myself going further than CAI and Exhaust at this time. Maybe down the road I will consider headers and at that point an X pipe. I have done some research on this site, many of the discussions however are about the cat back exhausts (Corsa, SLP, and so on)...but am I wrong with the understanding that the Axle back exhaust packages with the L99 resonator would help with some AFM issues? I am not so out of touch that I believe I wont have any AFM or Drone, I do understand it is there...But I know Borla has never flat out said their product helps combat the issue. I know it may not have an elevated sound that I would get with a cat back system, but I don't need anything to crazy. The atak seems to be a bit much for me. I actually don't mind the stock tone...problem is it seems we have to lay on the ground behind the vehicle just to hear it. I love the growl and tone of the S type, just curious if any other L99 owners had any issues... I found an S-type axle for just around 500 from a camaro5 sponsor which is hard to pass up when borla posts it at over 700 on the website...

I'm hoping to connect with some of the other Camaro owners here in my state to hear and ride in as many as possible. BTW, I've never heard AFM kick in or off while driving. I've never run across any of the "issues" with AFM that other folks seem to be experiencing. Nevertheless, I don't want to amplify the AFM "issues" or open a can of AFM worms. EDIT: fixed quote bracket

With everything stock, it is difficult to notice the AFM. I used to think I never noticed it and decided to start paying close attention. I can now tell when AFM kicks in, though I really have to be paying attention. The car has a completely different sound and there is a small vibration throughout the car. The vibration is annoying.

I was originally drawn to the borla s catback until hearing people cry about the AFM deal. unfortunately this sounds like an expensive gamble you have to make. I don't want to pay for two exhaust systems so I am leaning on the safe side and picking one designed for the L99

Since Borla advertises that each system is designed for each car/engine I would think that they could (or already have and I can find it) comment on their L99 experiences.

When my car was a L99 I started off with 1 7/8 ARH's , Xpipe and Borla "Stype" axlebacks and Boy did it sound good. I also added a ADM Cai
Of course I had my car tuned as well so I deleted the AFM when I had it tune. With just those mods I put down 365hp and 383tq go with the Borla S and have the AFM tuned out. if you can not accept tuning your car since that loses your powertrain warranty dont go with the Borla. |

I very rarely have the opportunity to "cruise". Most of my driving is city and stop/go. That is why I really don't know if AFM will be a huge burden for me when I drive a mile and stop again. Essentially, the sound I need is idle and WOT and Borla, IMO, has the best damn sound around. Even without headers the S just sound so throaty and deep. I guess I need to hear this in person before I dump the cash.

I am not bitching or moaning about this, I DO expect some minor issues with AFM and drone. I think thats part of having an aftermarket system. Same thing existed with previous american muscle cars. I was just curious if anyone on this forum had the L99 axle, not catback on their vehicle without headers who did not have a tune and could comment on this. I would think SOMEONE would have that setup, but maybe not.

I've put some hours into this and I'm going with the MBRP L99 exhaust. Corsa and solo mach xl seem like safe alternatives too.

Hey Entaille. Are you going with their catback? Do you have a CAI? Any other details on what you're doing? I've read several of your posts/threads, so I know you've been researching for some time too. I really appreciate any/all insights. Thanks

i have the s-type axle back and recently welded in the magnaflow tru-x x-pipe when i put in my lsr cai with a dyno tune. to be honest, at times i wish it were louder, but i like that it is quiet at cruising speeds, but pretty throaty when you go WOT. however there is drone at about 1500-2100 rpms, but i don't mind it bc i tuned out my afm.

I'll be going with the MBRP L99 catback, and a CAI inc cold air system. not at the same time - CAI will probably wait another month. those are the only two mods I plan on doing for now.
I'll be sure to make some detailed vids to help out when it's installed. |
