Remote Start on an M6
This is more a thread to put it to rest, with some good info, and tips to save a little money.
First off, IT IS POSSIBLE to install a remote start on an M6. This isn’t the 1960’s anymore, there have been advances in technology that allow us to do cool things like this. It is safe and legal. I went with the viper 5901 system. It is a great 2-way remote start, keyless entry, security system. It also allows for the smart start system to be added on. This system will allow you to have the functionality of the remote on your iPhone or blackberry, and use it from anywhere you have a data connection. It will even send alerts to your phone if the alarm is triggered. There is a shutdown procedure that must be followed so that the system knows the car is safe to start. This procedure is what ensures your car will not end up like the mustang in the pond. I’m sure anyone looking for info on installing a remote start on an M6 has seen the pictures. Here is the procedure: 1. After stopping where you intend to park, put the car in neutral. ![]() 2. Pull the e-break/parking break. ![]() 3. Release the clutch and break. ![]() 4. Push the remote start button on the viper system. This tells the system “make sure the car is in neutral, and I am not pressing the clutch” ![]() 5. Now take the key out of the ignition and exit the car. The car will continue to run ![]() ![]() 6. Next, press the lock/arm button on the remote and the car will lock, arm, and turn off. ![]() Now if any variable is broken (alarm goes off, door opens, car is unlocked, windows go down if you have the window add on module for the viper system, etc. the “manual mode” operation is broken, and the car will not remote start. This is how the car will not end up in the pond! TIPS AND TRICKS When the car starts, it checks to make sure the correct key is being used. This system ensures the car’s lock cannot be picked. The key fob must be right next to the ignition. Usually there are bypass modules installed with the remote start that bypass these factory security systems that allow the remote start to function. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) the remote start manufacturers have not been able to crack this 80-bit encryption yet. The only way around this for now is to lose a key. So wanting to save myself about $120, I ordered one off gmpartsdirect. The key will come uncut, and that is what I wanted. To program the key though, the key must be cut. The programming of a new key follows these steps: 1. Put working key in ignition, switch to on and then off, and remove key. 2. Put new key in ignition and do the same. Then the new key will be programmed. Well obviously you cannot put an uncut key into the ignition. So here is what I told the installers to do. 1. After the remote start is installed, go through the shutdown procedure (listed above) but remain in the car. 2. After the car is off, put the good key in the ignition and switch to accessory. (Not on, because this will trigger the alarm, and kill the remote start process) 3. Put the new key next to the ignition, and remote start the car. This will trick the car into thinking that the new keyfob next to the ignition is being programmed, and the DIC will read “3 Keys Learned” Saved about $100 for the key to be cut and programmed by the dealer. Now this key can be installed to the remote start system and your new remote start will function! To prove I am not lying, here is a video of the shutdown process, and the car starting. Enjoy! You don't feel that you have too many FOBS on your key chain? Also would there be a way to do this and use the factory FOB with remote start?

Where did you have yours installed? I was talking to the BestBuy installers and they informed me of the same procedure to remote start my manual Camaro. I'm not sure how much I trust Bestbuy install techs though..plus I remember it being really expensive. Congratz on the install though! Love it!

I wonder why GM does not offer remote start on the M6.

I dont have the number on me, but if you call the parts department at your dealer, the will be able to order you one for about $35. Just let them know you do not want it cut.

Haha, well it's only 2 fobs so.. no. I don't know how this would be done with the factory fob. That would require using the factory system, which I cant believe would let you use a clutch bypass.

The system know's that it is in neutral, because when you press the remote start button before you exit the car, it has to be running without pressing the clutch, or holding the break. The only way this would be possible is if the car was moving.

Safety. The car is supposed to be parked in gear. Plus the Tremec has no switch/ sensor to tell the ECM the car is in neutral. Relying on the last driver to assure the car was left in neutral is an accident waiting to happen.

Which is why if you have cruise control on and are able to shift into neutral the car will still rev wanting to get to whatever speed it was set on.
