Work in progress: LED in the dome light console

My wife's HHR has a single LED in the roof liner. I like this idea. . . So, I am attempting a DYI.

I got picked up a OEM LED from the doors.



I modified a regular plastic ground effects clip. Added two pieces of double sided tape on each end.

I was trying to make the clip the same level as the LED holder.




Temp install.





The LED will be shining through one of the stock holes in the console. There's no microphone on the passenger side.

On Star / Hands free Microphone.


Diver side where the mic goes.


Installed.



What I wanted to do is purchase another microphone and use it to hold the LED.. . . why I am NOT doing that is because that little mic is $70!!!

Still not sure if I like the way the LED is installed. . . I am open for any thoughts.

Looks good. Why not just fashion a holder yourself.

I've been considering that. . . but I'm unsure what to make it out of just yet. . .. .5" plexi glass would work well, or I could widdle some wood. LOL

Ok, new idea.

Instead of re-inventing the wheel I am going to go with this.

I ordered the part that holds the LED in the HHR's.




If you look at the over head console, there's a square on the driver side.




This is where i'll be putting the LED light.
I picked up a stock LED door light.



It will need some work, but I'll make it fit.

should have stated I'll be painting that part flat black to blend in.

... the malibu's also have LED's in the overhead console, they're molded a bit differently than the door ABL lights, but same color LED.

i have a extra dome light assembly i can sell.. it has everything and the little mic.. send me a message if ya want.. or do a search of threads i made.. i have a for sale thread with pics of it..

Update:

To take the unit out, you need to push the clips in.



Then the two screws found at the black "L" brackets.



I cut back the plastic on the LED.



Made a holder out of a chunk of plexi glass.







I painted it black.



Then I hot glued it in place.

If this doesn't have the look I want, I'll use the holder from the HHR I bought.

Think it turned out looking great.



Don't pay attention to the wire in the back ground.. I still need to fine tune the setup and hide the wire.

it might be hard, but can you try and capture the glow on the center console from the LED ?

i would if I had a center console in my car. . LOL... in the middle of adding HUD, thus taking out the dash.
