Gill Chips - have YOU called GM
If you have called GM and reported your gill chip issue please post here. If you have NOT, then call 1 800 222 1020 to report the issue. Do stop by the dealership and show your service manager the paint problem you are having so he can make a note on your cars' file. If they have any used Camaros on the lot go look at them, and point out to the service manager that it's not just YOUR Camaro. They will always say "Gee, this is news to me..." or something similarly vague.
Once you've had the Service Manager check your chips, make that call. Word to the wise. Your call goes to a call center in Argentina, so tell that person you wish to speak with a GM rep on US soil. They have to patch you through to someone in the USA if you ask, so don't let them say no. I spoke with a gentleman named Brent in the USA and related my gill issues to him. Complaining on the internet is NOT a valid complaint, you gotta call it in. So guys, if we want GM to step up to the plate and recognize the gill paint chipping as a valid issue, we have to report it through the correct channels. The more people who call, the more likely it gets recognized as a valid problem so please, take a few minutes to make the call. And again, if you HAVE called, please post! |

I have reported it thanks to a GM customer service rep who is on here. I was given a number and talked to them then went to my dealer for them to inspect. The outcome was there have been not enough cases to warrant a TSB or recall on the paint due to it being thin. They said it was rock chips and if I wanted to I could take it to another dealer for another evaluation. All the Chevy dealers are more than 30 miles away. I have basically given up. I even talked to a supervisor and nothing.
To the OP I talked to folks in the US.

Yes, but how much gill should the rocks chip, if the rocks could chip gills? It's mind bottling I know.

Better get used to it or pay for a touch up. This water based paint they're using is going to chip everywhere. It tis what it is.

Last May 2010 I called Gm (the dealer that is) and bought EOM Splash Guards. No chips issues since installed.
Eventhough we might ask GM to do something, it won't happen, so the Guards are the only available solution for less that 200,00$ installed. It's my best investment so far.

Yes it suck with all the chipping these cars have been having. Speaking of touch up paint has anybody done a video on how to properly use touch up paint so one can use it without making it look like a blob of paint in a chip?

GM did address this issue. They have a couple of recommendations and comments. I have colored these with my own opinions, so this post does not fully reflect GM's customer service position.
First, they encourage people to buy the GM splash guards. If you don't have the splash guards but do have rock chips, then you're not making an effort to protect your car. Second, fbodfather made a point about wrapping your car at the ZL1 unveiling that I attended at the Chicago Auto Show. He said that cars that are wrapped in protective material tend not to have this problem. He also said that GM has already added extra paint to this area, but it only delays the inevitable. This brings me to the third point. Would you rather have a car with these lines or a car with more tame design. The Camaro's shape makes it more likely to experience rear quarter rock chips because it gets thinner in the middle. If you're going to drive the car, it is going to have rock chips. Speaking of driving the car, I have a fourth point. Rock chips happen to all cars. Go to any store today. Find any car more than 1 year old. Look for rock chips. I guarantee that you will find some. Roads are not inherently clean, and that means debris is getting kicked at your car all the time. You have 2 choices to resolve this problem. You can either drive really far behind the car in front of you or you can not drive your car at all. These solutions reduce or eliminate any likelihood of road debris touching your Camaro. Fifth, the paint is water-based by EPA standards. If you have problems with the EPA standards, please contact your elected officials. We can't fix them here. Conclusively, I think we have to come to terms with the rock chip problem. I'm all for a manufacturer solution, but the problem is that we've fallen in love with a car whose design inherently is going to have rock chips. The physics of the car in a wind tunnel shows that the sleek design will force some debris and air to the gills, causing problematic rock chips. If you cover this area with 3M protective film, the problem is less evident. There is a solution available, but we can't blame GM for us liking a car with this problem.

I bought it and found the results to be superior to using the GM touch up paint pen.

It's a car. It lives in a world of rocks, sand, and bugs.
I'm driving mine every day, and I expect rock chips. Some people want their Camaro to be a show car. That's OK, too. Just be prepared to leave it in the garage. |
