this is a topic you need to read on and make your own decision. Some say yay and some say nay to the 160 t-stat. With that said, I am getting one with my headers and tune when it is done.

I got one, but after talking to Ted Jannetty, it's still in the box....

Here's a quote from him regarding this subject

The Question was is a 160 Thermo bad to use....

Here is the long answer

Minimum stat I would recommend is 180 and that is pushing it.

This is an aluminum engine and it moves alot more with temp than cast iron does, all the clearances in the engine are set up for 200 degree operating temps.

Running it cold can accelerate wear and actually reduce HP and possible spin a bearing.

Bearing clearances are very tight cold and open up to the correct specs at specified opertating temps.

Cold thermostats and low fan settings is a Crappy way to be able to get real aggressive with the timing to show a number on the dyno.

If it can't make the power at Normal Operating temps then what is the point?

Ted.

I have a 160 stat and my car usually runs around 188 during normal street driving. Prior to the stat it was around 199 or so. That's not including runs at the race track.

I'm not sure it's really that big of a deal one way or the other. I already have it so I'm probably not going back. However, I'm not sure I would worry about adding it unless I was going to do a heater hose relocation or swapping the cam. Something that would give you another reason to drain the radiator and/or tune.

You'll need to have the car's tune changed a little to have the fans come on differently.

Yes, put it in. You live in the south. With a 160 tstat it will run around 180. Nothing wrong with that

i live in las vegas and las night i went to the track, while i waited in line for my first run the car was idling around 200 degrees out side temp was 62. car is bone stock except for a catback exhaust... on my second run the car got up to 225 degrees while i waited in the staging lines... i then parked the car and opened the hood to let i cool down while i watched for the next 2 hours. after that i went back started the car to run again and the temp was down to 140 degrees by the time i got through to race the temp had gone up to 195!!! also in the winter time the temp in vegas is in the high 50's low 60's and while driving my cars temp is around 196-202 so in the summer when it 110 outside the cars temp will be even hotter. so my question is should i install the 160 thermostat thats in my trunk?

So how will a 160 degree thermostat act when sitting in traffic in the summer idling?

Stock car will continue to get hotter until fans kick on at 219 then cools back down about 10 degrees.

So with a 160, are the coolant temps still going to get that high that fast?
