Forgive me if this has been covered but I cant find it anywhere in the searches Ive done.
My question is this! If you disconnected the battery, and everything is locked up how are you going to get inside with the key, cos the I'm thinking, without the battery the windows wont index down and allow you to enter the car. Or will it?? How are you going to open the trunk if there is no battery/ how do you get inside to fold the chairs to get at the battery if the windows wont index in the first place? Am I missing something here?

Should open and close, you just won't have the best seal without the indexing.

Even if the windows don't crack the doors will still open, and you can get to the trunk through the rear seats and just pull the lever to release the trunk.

Wont you risk breaking the window if it doesnt drop down as you open the door?

Without the indexing, it does open, but it's a very snug fit. I would be carefull opening and closing it if the indexing is turned off or not working.

Great question! I think the upper edge would just slide over the seal, and like the other posts sad be a little stiff.

At the end of the winter; you could open the trunk with the key. After you hook up the battery everything should work as normal.

You open the door with the key pull the hood lever and put jumper cables on the posts under the hood used to jump off the car, and then use the remote to pop the trunk..
The window indexing is to keep from wearing out the window seals from repeated opening and closing of the door against the very close tolerance of the window seal..It won't hurt to ocassionally open it up without indexing the window...

I agree with Skyman 08.....you are not going to hurt the window but could cause premature wear to the seals if done repeatably for extended periods.

Opening without indexing is not a problem. To close the door, push the top edge of glass, it should bend just a littel bit, that will allow it to tuck under the molding. And even if you don't do that, it should still close, but the glass could (not likely but could) catch the molding if you close it in the full up position.
Before indexing glass, we used to depend on the glass standing up under the seal when closed and relaxing (bending in toward the car when opened). This would still allow the glass to tuck up under the molding, but indexing glass improves on this a great deal. I think your owners manual may even detail this for you. This does not hurt the car at all. Trust me, I used to do door systems for GM.

OK thanks guys. I really thought you could damage the window by pulling it without it down. This clears it up nicely!
