How to FIX the Economy
The Fix
There recently was an article in the St. Petersburg Fl. Times. The Business Section asked readers for ideas on: "How Would You Fix the Economy?" I think this guy nailed it! Dear Mr. President, Please find below my suggestion for fixing America 's Economy. Instead of giving Billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan. You can call it the "Patriotic Retirement Plan ": There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations: 1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed. 2) They MUST buy a new American CAR . Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed. 3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed. It can't get any easier than that!! P.S.. If more money is needed, have all members in Congress pay their taxes... Mr. President, while you're at it, make Congress retire on Social Security and Medicare. I'll bet both programs would be fixed pronto!

That plan would great if you could come up with the 40 Trillion dollars that it would take. Or if they are thinking of spending 40 Billion dollars then everyone over 50 would get $1,000.

$40,000,000,000,000
To FORCE everyone to retire? I feel this is a failed plan.

They need to start by being straight with people.
"hey all you people under 50, that social security that gets taken out of your check, just consider it a tax, because you aren't getting it back. We spent the money." And then start balancing the budget and paying down the debt. But then that would make sense. Of course they wouldn't do that. |

Just due to the nature of this thread...it's on a very short leash.
Not threatening to close it or anything like that, just a fair warning. |

fixing the economy is no joke when folks can't afford to feed their kids.
I could put everyone back to work with in 30 days. Change the over time rules. As it stands it cheaper to pay someone double or triple over time, then it is to hire another person. Its time for folks to buck up and think of others but you know those union members will cry bloody murder if they lost that 10-20 hr of over time pay. But it would solve all of our problems in the blue collar sector. All these roads project are nothing but overtime pay scams, run 24hr shifts with no over time pay and watch how quick things get done and how much better things get. |

I don't think 24 hour shifts would work to fix anything. I think it would be outright dangerous because fatigue is the number one cause of workplace accidents.

24 hr shifts are not done by 1 person, you have 3 shifts of folks. morning, evening and late night. No one works more then 8 hours. Which also helps put more folks to work as many are not morning people. They are more productive when they don't have to get up at 5am. |

Social Security would be fixed if they did not cap the tax limit amount on it. The stop at 90K gross, they should just keeping taxing all the income.

Or we could pile that money up and set fire to it. Would be just about as beneficial to people....
