L99 cold start tic, tic, tic..

My car has 350 miles on it, after 320 I opened it up a few times like maybe 10. I get a tic, tic, tic, tic .. About 3-5 of them during a cold start.. I just noticed it today after sitting for a while and restarting.

I couldn't reproduct it afterwards by restarting. So I went to work and 12 hrs later I cold started it. I got 3 to 5 quick tics. I never noticed this before. Other People say it's the lifters, but it sounds like a bearing rap before the oil pressure comes up to me.

It is definately something that tics until it gets oil pressure. My friend has a tic in his motor we can't seem to find that is a different tic. His comes and stays for about 5 minutes then goes away, I don't have that tic particular tic, so lets talk about my tic.

Do any of you have the same cold start tic ?

I'm not to worried about it because I have NOT beat the sh*t out of my car, just floored it a few times or ten. Plus we have a 5 years 100,000 mile warantee, right ?

it'll probably pop at about 5 yrs. 1 day or 100,001 miles. Or after your first real mod.

So flooring it a few times or ten from 10mph until/up to 80 mhp (where that would be legal) with 300 miles on the car shouldn't be a factor?

Shouldn't make a difference, I do that with mine quite a bit leaving little patches of rubger along the way. I don't think having the A6 makes a difference, sounds like an engine thing.

Maybe you could put a heater in your garage. ;-)

It's only 45 degrees here. Not that cold.

When you first start your car in the morning see if you can here some quick tics from your motor like about 5 of them before the oil pressure comes up. To me they sound like connecting rod bearings ticking before they get oil pressure. I'm only worried because I drove it like I stole it for the last few days and I only had 300 miles on it, now 350.

Anyone else notice this on colds starts? cold start tics?

I'll give a listen. My dealer told me to watch the read line but drive it any way I liked, so I did. Have you readlined over 4K?

Mine started about at 300 miles. You really hear it if your up next to a wall. Dealer said that they have to hear last more than a minute before they can do anything.

I can almost bet money that this is your fuel pump that is causing the ticking, which is pretty normal. If you guys had more miles on your cars I would say take some fuel logs, but if there was something else going on with fueling you'd know.

OP, I found this video. Watch until he puts the camera on top of his battery, that is what I imagined you to be talking about which is a fuel pump "clicking"

Does the sound come from the rear of the car? If so, then yes I hear the same ticking noises. Somewhere around here, somebody said that it was some sort of relay, but it's too early in the morning for me to remember

There was a post yesterday saying that GM was going to start using some lifers this spring that didn't bleed down as fast. Hopefully this change will be for both the L99 and LS3. The sound that's described sounds like hydraulic lifters until they pump back up with oil.
