Fluid Changes
I know this should be in the Drivetrain area, but we talk of efficiency and HP here so I think it's appropriate here also.
I did a Transmission Fluid and Differential Fluid change in my 2LT/RS yesterday. Pretty easy job and got to see some more of the engineering of this vehicle. The Transmission takes 1.9 ish quarts of fluid and I used Royal Purple Synthetic for my change on this. The Drain plug on the M6 Aisin transmission does have a magnet in it and mine had minimal metal filings on it. I used the squeeze bottles and a hose to do the refill. I strained the old oil through a coffee filter and other than VERY fine metal like metal flake there were no observable problems. The Differential had magnets on both the Fill and the Drain plugs. Slightly more fillings on these and the liquid was a lil darker. My fluid fill was Mobil1 75W90 LS and again I used 1 qt squeeze bottle for this fill also. Took it out for a test drive and things seemed smoother. I was on the highway on a section that I travel a lot and reset the MPG. During a 20 mile drive at about 60-65, my MPG was at 30.9. This same stretch usually nets me about 27.9 Not sure if this is real MPG or not, but I think I will see a little gain. Should be changing the Oil in the motor next week and that will be Mobil1 also. Wanted to do this process in steps and see if my real world MPG increases and where it does. The Royal Purple was $18.99 a Qt Mobil1 75W-90 LS was $8.99 a Qt |

Thanks for the information.
I just changed my differential in my 2LT. Stinky and grey. I put in Royal Purple. I really couldn't tell the difference while driving but I'm glad I changed it. Filling the differential with fluid was a challenge. Kitty litter works wonders at soaking up spills.

Have heard of the differential change, but trans fluid change so soon ? How many miles on your car ? When is that recommended to be done ?
Thanks for the info.

I know this probably sounds stupid but do the automatics have a diff that we have to change? I thought only the M6 has it....maybe I'm wrong?

I have right at 1700 miles on my Camaro. I work at an AutoZone so some of my purchases I get at a better rate than some. I also believe in synthetics for their protection and better wear. Been using them since I first bought Mobil1 while working/managing a Texaco station in New Mexico in 1975!
I change out fluids sooner than most, but here again, it is to flush out any grit and metal that may be in there. More piece of mind than anything. Mine was not as bad as some seen in the V8 Forums. And please remember, I've waited to have this car now for 35 years and it's a third vehicle for me. It gets pampered. I've even wiped down some of the suspension parts because they got dirty. LMAO! |

devildoc, The diff is the rear end unit of the car. That has 1 qt of 75-90WT gear oil in it. It's a simple change as things go. You would not need the Limited Slip additive in yours because the auto's have an OPEN diff.
Hope that helps |

Ok, so just buy the 75-90WT without any limited slip additive. Gotcha! I'm pretty sure I can figure out the process but when it comes to the specifics of certain things I'm just not sure until I do it for the first time. Thank you cschmidt!

You'll want to change your differential fluid as well, but NOT with limited slip fluid. |

Limited slip additive ? I thought it was standard 75-90W Mobil 1 ?
I have a M6 and did not see in the manual anything about an additive. Is this your recommendation or a requirement ? Thanks

I spent the extra $10 on royal purple Max Gear 75w-90 for the diffy. This has the LS additive as well. I'm either gonna do the same for the tranny (or get redline more likely). the LS additive is a REQUIREMENT for the Manual Tranny as it has Limited Slip differential. The automatic isn't, and should NOT have the additive. In the Manual, under recommended fliuds section. Page 10-8. |
