WTF - Are they replacing the Z28 with the ZL1?

Just read the Chicago Auto show articles about the ZL1. Impressive stats but no mention about the Z28. Will the ZL1 overshadow the Z28? Will the Z28 be even more of a car than the ZL!? I have held my hard earned $$$ to buy the Z when it comes out next year choosing not to buy the 2010 SSRS. This was not quite the news I was waiting to hear.

Based on the Q&A from the other day, IF GM does a Z28, it will be a 'less is more' track car, set to compete against the Boss 302 Mustang. It would probably be pretty similar in execution to the SSX concept shown a few months ago at SEMA.

The ZL1 was always more powerful than the Z28..it was always the "better" muscle car..

History is repeating itself.

The ZL1 engine was more powerful, but "always the better muscle car", I don't think so.

Uh what would make the Z28 a better muscle car? The ZL1 is the fastest and rarest of all Camaros....Z28 has never been able to match it. The Z28 will be in it's rightful place as the competitor to the Boss 302.

I agree with this guy off that Japolnik comment section!

Quote:
Now, as for the Z/28, that's seems pretty simple from the standpoint of an enthusiast:

1) Strip out the interior; simple things like making the back seat an option, but not standard.

2) Use a lighter steering wheel, lighter seats, strip out some sound deadening, etc.

3) Stuff the high-revving, naturally-aspirated LS7 in the front, tied to a six-speed manual. The LS7 would be perfect for a number of reasons; first off, it would match the character of the high-revving 305 in the original Z/28 incredibly well, it's already in production, and it strikes a good middle ground power-wise between the standard LS3 and the supercharged LSA.

4) For the sake of expanding the car's market appeal, throw in an optional automatic like the Aussies get. Enthusiasts may bitch about an optional automatic, but there's nothing saying those enthusiasts have to purchase the optional automatic, so they can shove it up their asses and around the corner.

5) Take the time to put the car in a wind-tunnel and develop a unique, functional rear spoiler that is only available on the Z/28.

6) Similarly, if you want to have some fun with it and make a real race-ready car, a new, unique-to-the-Z/28 underbody would be a smart option, as well.

7) Adjustable suspension, as in the new Boss Mustang, is a must.

8) An easily installed roll cage that meets SCCA requirements would also be a smart option.

9) A larger fuel tank for racing; or, alternatively, an optional, easy-to-install fuel cell would be a nice touch.

10) I'm dreaming here, and I wouldn't expect this to happen in a million years, but making the chassis out of aluminum, as you did with the Z06, would be mind-bogglingly awesome.

Do some research on muscle cars not just Camaros.

I think it's cool that they resurrected the ZL1.

The ZL1 is what most of us thought would be called "Z28". But they had never confirmed the existance of this car, nor its name until now..so, indirectly, yes.

Now after a couple of days to sleep on it, I am cool with this new car. I always thought that the hood slats were out of character with the Z28's heritage.

It is a very slick looking production. I am waiting on the performance numbers, and hoping that: 1. The numbers will be better than the gt500 and not too far off of a couple of aftermarket camaro numbers. 2. The starting price won't be past 50g so that I might be able to squeak into one without selling something.
