Im just gonna chirp in from the business side of all this and see what everyone thinks. Ive been reading around and from what we know save adding a supercharger not much new development will be done. so this gives us some things to keep in mind
1) is gm willing to upstage the corvette with a camaro 2)how does gm answer to the gt500 3)answer the following with what gm has in hand. so with that said, i dont think that they will upstage the corvette, its too valuable to them, and too offer a cheaper car, with a higher performance engine, regardless of weight, i dont think makes business since to them, since horseposer sells more than other merits a car might have. Also the gt500 at about 45k (right?) put gm in a tight spot intentionally by ford, and was a hella good business call, since to upstage that, they would have to have a camaro that upstages the vette, which again i dont think will happen unless in a very limited very pricey production run. so my take on this is then that gm keeps the same structue and tier to there production models that they had for the 4th gen camaros, giving the direct injection 6 from the cadillac to the base camaro, the downtuned vette engine out of the pontiac g8 to the z28(372hp or something like that), and the full blown old vette engine,ls2, to the ss at 400 hp. (the only problem i have with this is i read someone said that its going to be 2 v6's and a v8, and that the ls2 is going to be phased out) If they do this then gm easily bests the mustang in 2 out of 3 tiers and preserves the corvette as the flagship, which to me makes business sense. This also gives them room to offer an exclusive cobra killer in the 55-65k range that wouldnt be so painful to the vette, which could sport an ls7, or supercharged variant (even though gm hasnt been to fond of blowers on these animals as yet weve seen). other convincing angles of this is that it has been noted that cadillac is coordinating on this project so to see the cadillac 6 in this thing wouldnt be a surprise, also, everyone buying one of the ss' would prolly know that for a little bit more you could bolt on a supercharger and smoke the nuts off of a gt500. thanks for reading, im interested in everyones take on this. |

another quick thought...it could also be that gm has decided for the camaro not to really compete with the gt500 leaving that to the base corvette, which costs the same. this could be suppported by the thinking that while there is some aspect of family utility to the camaro, its not as likely that that audience is going to be targeted as much with the gt500, so the corvette could fit that bill (older croud more money). also even though the engine in the gt500 is stronger, it does give up 700+ lbs to the corvette in weight, so they do run about the same. Then you can take this and explain the 2 v6's being a base and an rs trim in the camaro, and the v8 being and ls2/3, and all is right with the world again from what ive read and seen posted.
(camaro=cheaper=lower grade fuel=probably the L76 out of the g8) |

I don't know how much I like that....I mean, I'm not putting it down or anything, there's just something unsettling about it to me.
No. 1: GM has already said that they're not worried about stepping into Vette performance territory. I'll see if I can find a link... but a Vette is a Totally different car, one that will also continue to see improvements. 2nd: (I don't know if I misunderstood you)But putting a > 400 hp engine in the Camaro after unvieling it with the LS2...? Um, Stupid! 3rd: There is more to this car than buisness. There's Bob Lutz. Without him around, I really don't think it'd be back. "Buisness" says the Camaro failed. Why fail again? |

There is no doubt you will see dealer special edition Camaros like the SLP, Rockero and yenko camaros but I think you will see a factory ZL1 to compete with the GT500.

...maybe. But it definitely won't be a high-volume car. Which, along with a better engine - will drive cost up.
Hey, speaking of engines...is there any way to find out how much an LS1, and an LS2 cost...as crate-engines? I've got a theory brewing, but I need some supporting evidence, first... |

I just got back from this years Vettes of the Rockies. GM had 2 of the 2008 Corvettes there, and both were sporting the LS3. This makes me think that the LS2 is on the way out. Good news to me. My new Camaro needs an LS3 (supercharged).

I thought Yenko wasn't around anymore. And a ZL1 would be a great option, although part of me wants them to just leave it alone and find a new designation for it. A big block isn't going to be a choice. I don't think 427 cubes is going to happen either. If they do come out with a GT500 competitor, I hope they try and keep the weight down. And that they don't price gouge.

Yenko is already trademarked by Honda, so you wont see one of those..

Yeah, Yenko Chevrolet is gone. But nearly every nascar driver and owner has a dealership. Something similar probably goes for drag racing teams. Hope is not lost.

What were the two companies that made the ZL1 4th gens a few years back? Berger and Scoggins, right? Anyone remember those?
