Mine started out being a bit harder to shift into 2nd compared to the other gears. Kind of like it was catching on something before going into gear. All other gears were a single action shift, whereas 2nd was a dual action shift - snagged on something, then into gear. It was like that from day one (10 miles) on my car but eventually got worse over time. Eventually it went from catching to grinding when going into 2nd.

With my new transmission, shifting into every gear feels the same now...a single action shift. 2nd is no longer snagging on something when shifting.
My car has around 850 miles. It is still notchy every once in a while but I haven't heard any grinding noises yet. Did you get a new transmission through a chevy dealer?

Just keep an eye on it and see how it does as you rack up the miles. You've got a 100k/60mo powertrain warranty so unless you are having serious problems, there is no rush to get it fixed tomorrow. Just mention the problems you are having next time your car is in for service so that it is documented early (and often) in case it gets worse.

The GM regional manager opted to just replace my entire transmission rather than repair due to the lack of parts being available at the time. My dealer happened to have a new AY6 transmission in their parts department so GM gave them the go ahead to just put that in rather than wait on the needed parts to be pulled from the assembly line.

Mine has no issues normally, but when I've got on it hard and went to pull the gears it grinded. UGH!!!! I look around to see who's laughing at me and I KNOW how to drive a manual. I haven't had an Auto in 16+ years. It only happens when I'm at higher RPM's then I punch it and it won't go in and grinds. I thought maybe I was too aggressive but it looks like a common theme. SIgh.

If it's only happening on aggressive 1/2 shifts, try the Royal Purple. It helped me out immensely.

My car had that problem since day one, now coming on to 5,000 miles and still no other problems with the trannie.

Its still 75w90 and its GL5 which is what the manual requires so there is no warranty issue as long as its filled to the right height with the car level.

I agree with Summit, Synthetic fluids help. It was a huge difference when I put Mobil 1 Synthetic in the Trans and Rear at 3k miles. Unfortunately the center shaft assembly still took a dump on me Havent done the synthetic in the new transmission yet.. will report back when I get the time. Hopefully the liquid can fix the design.

I'll try to page through the recent posts of the thread and update our list this weekend. Be sure to post the miles your issue occurred if you want it listed. Thanks guys!

Panda, your signature is bad A$$. Did you take that picture? We just got a DSLR.. I need to get some tips from you if you took that.

Anyone try Lucas 75w90 Synthetic? Its getting really good ratings on Amazon and one of the reviews claims he was still getting a grind with the Purple and the Lucas stopped it?!? Maybe I'll be the guinea pig for that brand and someone else can try Amsoil and we can compare.. I think our autozones have this stuff..

hey man my damn car has been doing this more often now. Im at 12000km but shes been doing it since around 1k. Its very frustrating because the clutch is all the way down and yet she grinds. It happens more frequently for me in slow driving or traffic driving. Only grinded once on a high rpm shift. Very frustrating but i fear my car will come back in worse shape after a repair at the dealer :(

is the newer tranny smoother?
My car sometimes, very rarely, drive liks a dream and the shifting is buttery smooth where as most of the time shes pretty notchy....
played around with an SS M6 and it was extremely smooth. Time for me to read through this entire thread

Mine varies also. It seems to do it on hotter days/heavy traffic/a few spirited take offs in a row. I shifted slow as possible in a traffic jam on wed and 3rd did the stupid light grind sound. Its still 90% better than before the swap.

Im still not sold on the throwout bearing not being part of the problem. The SS and GTO transmissions are a dream in comparison.

Even though it cost me $80, people might want to consider having the work done at a dealer. That way it's been documented that the right viscosity fluid was used and it was filled properly.

While a fluid change can't actually fix a bad design, I'm sure it can alleviate the stresses cause by a bad design. Remember though, I'm not racing my car.

Anyone who takes their v6 6 speed to the track on a regular basis or likes to power shift their car on the street will be asking for trouble (even properly designed trannies can't take that kind of abuse on a regular basis).

Ok, so I decided to tackle the fluid change on my own this evening. The drain plug looks like its covered in sludge when you pull it. Stick it in a paint strainer and hit it with some brake parts cleaner. Mine has about 8-10x 2mm pieces of gear attached to the magnet. I will be posting pictures later tonight. This isn't shavings like you would find on a magnetic drain plug. They are large 2mm chunks and you can clearly see they are machined edges of the gears. I wish our camera would zoom further. I may be able to crop it some so that it can be more clearly seen.

I'm a bit disappointed considering my car has never been to the track, has 1200miles on it since the swap, and has only seen 6500 3x since the swap.

Like summit endorses, swap your fluid. Just make sure to document the pieces of your gears that decided to quit the job early.
