We did 3 stages on our L99
First Borla axle back - nice quiet rumble Second took off resonators - a little more rumble still quiet and still do not hear AFM. Third add ARH headers and no cats. Much better sound. |

[QUOTE=brantley847;2285141]Not sure how many of you have that setup, but I am looking to pick up the axle back for the L99.
I have the very system you're thinking about. CAI brand intake and Borla S axle back. The AFM is amplyfied some when it goes in and out. It's a bit annoying but I don't know if it can be heard by anyone you drive by. I've thought about tuning it out but I don't want to mess with the warranty just yet. As for cabin drone at certain speeds, no big deal. There is some but it won't rattle your brain. The best part is nailing it with this setup. You don't know what makes more noise, the air getting sucked in the front or getting blown out the back! And you're in the middle. PM me if you want more info. |

Flowmaster
There is another thread on the forum in which several members like the Flowmaster (American Thunder Series) cat back system...its an entire system for around $600 bucks, its 3 inch pipe and American Thunder Mufflers.
I am thinking I like the sound and the fact that its a complete kit. Samples: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FLOWM...-2LIT-/2805520

I have the Borla Cat Back installed on my L99 and I think it sounds great.I also had the AFM tuned out prior so I dont know what it would sound like with it on.

So I have a question, and it may be a dumb one, but what is the difference between the borla axle back and installing new mufflers to the stock system? I mean other then the fact you can "bolt on" the axle back and you have to weld in new mufflers is there any? My local muffler shop can put Borla mufflers on the car for 135 each installed so 270 out the door. This seems to do the same thing as the axle back system for 500 less. Thoughts?

They are definitely Borla...these guys have done several exhaust for me on previous vehicles, and do a good job. I just didn't know if there was a difference between the system and just adding mufflers. There seemed to be many post about cat backs, but the original question was about AXLE BACK....I am worried about the drone issue as well. I had afm on my Avalanche, and could hear when the engine kicked in and out of afm. It sounded "funny" (yes that's a technical term) when afm was on but wasn't annoying so is this the sound people are referring to, or is it the vibration noise you already hear with the stock system at around 70 mph cruising on the highway? If it is the vibration noise you already hear, how much louder does it get with AXLE BACK not catback?

I would imagine that "funny" sound was the AFM you heard from the avalanche. Was that with an aftermarket setup? I don't consider drone or vibration as a "funny" or even annoying sound, more of a humming... Again, I've had only ONE person with the CAI and axle back send me a private message about his setup. He said the AFM is noticeable but he does not play music often. I do...I play it moderately loud. Not burn your ears loud, but easily into the 13-17 volume range of the boston acoustics system....he also said while at times it can be annoying, if he had to, he wouldve bought the same setup again. He did admit he would tune the AFM out after a few years, but was hesistant to do so on a new vehicle. I could see the AFM being an issue for people who like to roll the windows down and only listen to the exhaust, while I do that on occasion, it is a rarity in this 105 degree FL weather for me...
