It's a lot more efficient than a Unit heater plus I have A/C on mine which you can't do with a Unit heater from Grainger. Radiant heat is okay as long as you plan on heating the garage all the time. It takes a long time for the slap to heat up plus if you don't maintain some heat it could freeze up unless you use antifreeze. I like being able to turn my heat off in the garage when I'm not using it and having it quickly heat up when I do. You can't do this with radiant heat.
For 2,400 Sq/ft where you live without knowing all the specifics on the building and not knowing what max temp you want to maintain I would say as a rough est. you need about 100mbh of output.
well lets put it this way...I live just east of Denver and on the coldest of days....Zero or so for a week on end the shed would just drop slightly below 25 or so at night. I have been using a forced air kerosene heater for the last 10 years and would heat it up once per day during those stretches to around 45 degrees. Used a 150,000 btu heater for about 20 min is all. The rest of the time during winter temps outside are generally lows of 20 or so. Daytime highs in the 30's and the shed never goes below 32 without suppliment heating.
So with that all said...No I am looking to blast it warm enough to work while I am out there...then it will probably be fine otherwise.. Do I still need such a large one? I was thinking if I got a 10degree rise I would only need 83,000 btu

Yeah, I think you would be okay at about 80,000 Btu in that case. It really depends on how warm you want to be and really how the building is constructed. My garage is 1,900 sq/ft and I have a carrier mvc80 which has an output of about 76,800btu. It's very efficient and heats the garage very evenly.

Build 2 ft in either direction that you *think* you need... Also, always use a larger door when possible. 9ft, min

The all-around best units for a garage are the ceiling hung "Modine" type heaters.

However, if cost is a factor, and when is it not, a Home Depot type un-vented wall heater is cheap and will heat your garage beyond your expectations.

Here is a picture of my 15,000/30,000 btu wall heater. The best $250 I ever spent. I have a 3-1/2 car insulated garage with insulated doors. I live in S/E Michigan and I turn the heater on in December and leave it on for 4 months...until around mid-March. The only problem I ever had with this heater was the garage had a tendency to get too warm. I solved that by running it in the 15K mode, but I still had to throttle it down with a ball valve (see photo). I never run it in the 30K btu mode.

Normally, I try to keep the garage temp around 55*-60* all winter. If I have to work in the garage, I'll turn it up a little. It can easily and quickly warm the garage to the upper 70s (or higher) in the dead of winter.

My wife calculated that it cost less than $1 a day to heat my garage at the 60* setting....worth every nickel. Sometimes, I will jump in my car (not the Camaro) and drive off in my tee shirt...in February!

Radiant heat is the best heat I've ever experianced. If I were to ever build a new house it would have radiant floor heat all around. As for the freezing problem.....thats why you fill it with Glycol!!

Unfortunately they no longer offer Reddy Heaters. They have been replaced by Pro Com from what I can tell on the net. I have propane and would have to have a line run to the garage. I wonder if electric would be any better?

Electric heaters like that are very ineffecient. If you don't want to run a line from your tank to the garage, just get a 100lb cylinder.

look here...they got about everything you could want

Waste oil burner for me. 3200 square feet of shop, 140,000 btu black gold unit by Norkea. I keep the shop at 70 all winter long and burn about 1000 gallons a winter. I have never had a problem getting free oil for it untill this winter. The waste oil companys are paying for it now rather then charging to take it. But all in all I still get enough free to get me through.
