The key code should have 8 positions. The glove box lock cylinder only uses 4 cut positions - positions 5 - 8 in the cut sequence. That lock cylinder for the gas cap in your pic also looks like it is only 4. So you will be using positions 5 - 8 in the code, 5 being closest to the head of the cylinder (key hole end). There are Right and Left tumblers to be loaded on each side of the cylinder, left codes on one side right on the other.

That looks so close to the glove box lock cylinder, one thing that may help you is to take out the glove box cylinder and carefully take out the tumblers and springs to see what order they are in that cylinder. Then duplicate that order of tumblers in your new gas cap cylinder.

Once you know the key code, a good parts department should be able to code that cylinder in < 5 minutes. Shouldn't even have to assign it to a technician. $50 would be criminal theft. Or DIY it for free.

If you can dissassemble your glove box lock for comparison, may not even need your key code.
i just got the locking gas cap i ordered from maureen@rodgerschevy. i went to the dealer today to get my key code. they were charging me $50 just to get the key code. plus $55 to get the gas cap coded.

then the guy from the parts dept didnt even know if this would fit in the camaro. they are full of s*%^ !!!! i walked out and im gonna go to another dealer where a friend of mine works at.

So do I. Every gas station I've filled up at has a sign telling you to do so. It may even be a state law.

I've never been in such a hurry to fill up that I couldn't afford an extra 5 seconds to unlock my gas cap.

To the OP: Thanks for posting this and the part numbers. I'll be getting one for my car. That's one less key to worry about.

the locking gas cap that we got is not directly from GM. its from AC DELCO that is approved by GM. yes, it doesn't make it it more valuable but it does make it better by using the same key fob for the car. thats one less key to worry about. smaller keys tend to get lost and misplaced. and the cap is not expensive. it's only $15. the only problem is setting the keycode.

You know that GM has a part in the filler neck to keep the hose out of the tank...pretty sure it is on the Camaro too...

Now a-days they just drill a hole in the tank with a container below to get the gas...

Picked up one of theses at the dealership. The P/N was 22790846 as previously stated. It wasn't too difficult to figure out the configuring the lock. It came with instructions and once you have the key it is fairly straight forward to configure. There are just 4 tumblers, 2 right and 2 left. Each tumbler has 4 options. All you need to do is try each of the 4 options in the first tumbler and see which fits best and then do the same for the next tumbler until you figure out all 4. Took about half hour to figure out and complete.
