WTH is the burning smell!!?!?

Something is producing a mild to strong burning smell but I can't find the cause of it so far. There's no visual smoke and there's no wires or anything that I can see so far that has burned. It almost smell like burning metal.

Going to the dealer is out of the question for me right now

Anyone know if this is a known issue or have experienced this yourself and found out what it was?

The car runs good, and there's no CEL, and the parameters look good.

Well....I have had ths happen twice...

1) Week before my engine blew up, my guess it was the oil burning up. At the time no one could trace. I could smell it in the passenger compartment and the engine bay.

2) After picking up the rebuilt car, I was driving back to CLT from up north and ran over some plastic grocery bags, one of them got caught in the CAT and kept burning up until this weekend. I think almost all of it is gone. I could smell it in the passenger compartment and the engine bay and this time as soon as I would step out of the car.

If you can smell the burning smell when you step outside of the car, I would check directly underneath the passenger compartment to see if anything is caught underneath.

If you only smell it in the engine bay....well cross your fingers

It's happened to me a time or two, but I never found it, I suspected it was under the hood

I don't smell it in the cabin, only from outside. Oil pressure look good and my oil level is fine(fingers crossed).

Only thing I haven't done is get under the car. I think I will do that today while changing my oil and inspect carefully.

It just started happening today. At first, I thought it was a smell coming from peoples working on a building across the street from where I first noticed this morning while I was at the store.

I just hope this is nothing..

H2oplay, it does smell like it's coming from the engine bay but I guess I will know for sure once I crawl under the car while doing my oil change in this freezing cold.

is it possible something might have come loose after the install/re install of your exhaust?

The smell is coming from the front and no further than the transmission. Is not the exhaust.. I'm going to crawl under the car while changing my oil today and go through every wire, connection, etc.. I really do hope that I find a trash bag stuck and burning lol. I reeaaallly hope I am not about to fall a victim of oil problem.

yes, it's only happened a couple of times. I popped the hood and sniffed around, checked fluid levels, looks for leaks, never came up with anything.
Could have been road debris as another poster mentioned, but I don't remember driving through any.... Are you auto or manual?

I know I've smelled clutch a time or two, but that has a distinct odor, not the same as what I think you have, and I know why that happened..

I have a manual, 17k on the odo. I know is not the clutch. I been driving manual since day one so no excessive clutch slipping here unless I am doing it on purpose LOL. Everything was fine then all of a sudden I am getting the smell.

I just have a feeling that once I go under the car I won't find nothing out of ordinary and the smell will probably go away.

Hope it's not the neighbor's cat. Good luck and hope it's not an issue.

I had this happen also before. On my LLT it was the wrap on my headers. The other was a plastic bag. In my DD it has happened also and it was my belt rubbing as it cycled, tar from the road splashed on my pipes, and spoiled oil on my bottom end. Good luck, hope it's not what we don't want it to be.

Well, changed the oil today and while doing it I went through every inch of the vehicle or at least where my eyes would allow me to see, there's nothing out of ordinary. The car runs amazing and all parameters are where it's supposed to be. The smell is still there but not as strong as this morning. It smell very faint, like it's going away. I just hope it's nothing and something that might of got on my exhaust from the road. I am going to give it a few more days and just take it from there. I will check my oil 20 times per day in the meantime just to be sure though.

I smell something every so often as well. Not inside but outside when I get out of the car and walk past it... I notice it more so if I drove the car pretty hard, and really got on the gas a few times. Still can't figure out what it is that actually causes it
