Room for 5

My question is regarding seat belts.

I understand that this is a 4 seater and NOT a 5 seater. I'm sure I'm one of the 5% who might ever even think to bring this up. I'm sure this is is not even remotely possible, but I figured I'd ask just to gather feedback.

Is there a possiblity that the back seat could ever seat 3? meaning, could a 3rd middle seatbelt be fabricated into the model? i don't even care if they have to sit on that little hump back there! (although i know there are safety regulations behind these sorts of things) I ask because I'm a family man, and well...I have kids. Ages 8, 6, 4. So since the average family has 2.5 children...I think (again the 5%) it would appeal even more to the average family guy, who wants a sporty ride, but can still fit his family in it. But hey..where I have 3...the next guy might have 2.

I'd love to be able to have the 3 kids squeeze into the back, and my wife and I up front, and take the family out for a fun sporty spin. Not that the scenario is common of course, but it would be nice to have that option. I have a 1st gen Dodge Neon that I've had for years as my econobox and daily driver, (which I've enjoyed modding), and I bought my wife an '03 Tahoe...since she's primarily responsible for truckin around the little ones. My kids have a huge love for my lil neon, since i've ramped it up, and they always enjoy taking a ride in 'daddy's car'. The best case scenario I have with the Camaro, is just me and the three kids, and my wife will have to ride on the roof or i pack the littlest one in the trunk. (i kid i kid).

I bring this up because I've been in the market for a new car, a sports car mind you, and i've restricted myself to getting a car that has at minimum 4 seats. At the top of my list was the 350z (which i nixed because it's only a 2 seater), and then the infiniti G35 coupe (which I nixed because of the new camaro). i'm dead set on getting the Camaro regardless. i love our tahoe (although that 14mpg is a killer), and really can't wait to have another chevy in my driveway. I'd much rather have american made sitting in my driveway over an import, primarily because parts tend to be less expensive, and I like to save money and do a lot of the repairs myself. the 'stang was my only viable domestic option until now. I'd take an old 67' stang, and I don't mind the new ones...but they're just not my style. the new camaro IS...and i'm happily holding out on getting a new car until it's finally here!

And FBod...if you happen to be reading this, I'd like to commend you and the GM team for such a well thought out plan. I know the execution will be superb when it's finally done. I haven't cared for the Camaro much since the mid 80's (hence the username...l0l)... but this new beauty has renewed my interest in the Camaro. Not only are you all getting the approvals from us new and re-newed fans (i'm 28), but even the older muscle car guys (who aren't impressed much unless is from the 70s or 60s), are drooling over this car. I showed my wife's grandfather, who has 2 '63 Split window vette's, and even a C5 as well. He's one of those that isn't impressed by anything unless it's a 'vette...and even he was thoroughly impressed by the new camaro. I have a 1:18 scale version of the concept that I showed him. I left the room, and when I came back, he had taken it downstairs to show his son, (my wife's uncle who use to have a '69)...and he loved it too! That's a least 3 generations of men that say you guys have gotten this thing right! and if you include my two sons...that's 4 generations! My boys drool when they watch transformers and know that daddy will have bumble bee in the driveway soon! They can't wait to get in it!

...i know i'll get laughed at...because there will be those that say, if you want to cart your family around in something...look elsewhere, this is a sports car!

But I'm just dreaming...and wanted to know if it's even remotely possible.

Not sure if it will have seat belts for three passengers in the back (most sports cars with a back seat don't). But it is a very, very roomy car for a two door coupe. I recently saw the orange convertible concept car at an autoshow up close and was incredibly impressed with the interior room of the car. It can easily fit 4 full sized adults, with plenty of leg space to boot.

Honey, you are looking at this the wrong way. GM is giving you the opportunity to have quality time with each child. I assure you competition with children is big when it comes to moms and dads time. If your wife works it is even worse since both of you get it. This, however, can be in your favor. You can be going for the drive with one child and giving them undivided attention with something you can enjoy together that gives that one child a life long memory with being with dad in the "camaro". AND NOT HAVING TO SHARE WITH A SIBLIN'. Mom gets time also when you get the babysitter for that once a year date(kiddin'). I have 5 kids and this is essentual for each child to feel like they are special. You may end up with a child that doesn't like going out in the camaro (God Forbid) and have to come up with something else that has to be spread around. I have to admit that I am at the other end of the spectrum. I have 2 in college and only 3 left at home. I know this sounds terrible but 2 of the girls aren't even interested in cars! I failed somewhere, I know, but it solves the competition for the seat in the car and really even for the front seat! I'm always thinkin' positive.

I don't think you're going to get laughed at as much as you might expect. At least I hope not, because I'm in exactly the same boat. I've already posted in another thread that, assuming there is enough room, I will be having an upholstery shop "fixing" the back seat to make it a safer seat with 3 belts. If there isn't room, it will suck having to stick the littlest one in the trunk, but we all make sacrifices....lol...

Anyway, I hold out no hope that the back seat will have 3 belts. I can only hope that there's enough room back there to correct that issue.

Here's hoping.

I honestly would not be surprised if you can fit 3 in the back, the challenger can. That and since this is IRS and not live axle like the mustang you wont have that massive hump between the two back seats.

And no you shouldn't be laughed at.. thats the reason they are called muscle cars instead of sports cars, they have muscle but are functional (trunk and backseat!)

you hope monger! lmao!

well i'd be interested in seeing how you manage that, because I will want to do that as well. I thought about that... but just wasn't sure if there might be a safety issue with having a shop tweak it for that.

I have a younger sister and when we used to pack in the back of my dads 3rd and 4th gen, my sis would have to sit on the bump in the middle and "Watch for police and duck" while driving around town. We never went really far either if we had to travel like this so it wasn't too bad lol.

My ex had 3 young kids, had we stayed together I wouldn't be saving for the Camaro. 5 seats would have worked then, I'm sure the kids would had loved being in the Camaro. It's me now so I'm hoping the back is big enough for one person when two people ask if they can hitch a ride.

Expect to see room for 2 in the back. The Camaro just isn't oriented toward the family. Fortunately, the more family-oriented models can come in sporty trims. The Cobalt SS has a good reputation on the streets and plenty of interior and trunk space. Take a look at the HHR SS if you like the woody style. Both with have a turbocharged engine with 260 hp to beat just about anyone in their classes.

I think that five would be kinda' cool but I wouldn't have a use. I only plan to have one more child so the four seats would be fine for my family. I can see your point however because I like going on drives with my family and it would suck not to have enough seats for everyone. Maybe they'll come p with a sort of jumper seat or something...

I think it's going to turn out more like the 4th Gen in the sense that you'll have two belts back there. Like Silverado said, I'm sure there's places you can go to customize it and add a third seatbelt. It might not be the most comfortable for the child sitting in between, but it'll work. And, if you want to go so far as to customize the seats as well, well...that'll cost some cash, but would work too.

Just another good reason why I don't plan on having more then two kids. That and it kinda sucks being the eldest of four siblings.
